The ARTIS International Research School is a new training initiative based on the experience of ARTIS (Advancing Research in Translation and Interpreting Studies, 2014-present) and the former TRSS (Translation Research Summer School, 2001-2013), in collaboration with the Jiao Tong Baker Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies. The School will primarily address the needs of doctoral and early career researchers in translation and interpreting studies, as well as more experienced academics who are new to the discipline or interested in engaging with recent developments in the field.

The ARTIS International Research School will take place in Jiao Tong University, Shanghai once every two years, starting on 6-11 July 2020 and rotating with the International Research School for Media Translation and Digital Culture.

The ARTIS International Research School aims to contribute to realising one of the priorities articulated by the Advisory Board of the Jiao Tong Baker Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies, namely, ‘enhancing dialogue between Chinese and international scholars of translation and creating an open, welcoming space for all scholars, but particularly early career scholars, to interact and explore new avenues of research’.

English in a World of Strangers: Rethinking World Anglophone Studies

In an increasingly globalized world characterized by multipolar power structures, trans-cultural flows and interlaced digital pathways, English has long since become a worldly language. A whole universe of discourse predicated on the question of who owns Eng-lish has been thrown into doubt: more than a billion people worldwide ‘do’ English in new and often unexpected ways, and anglophone literatures and cultures all over the world have become veritable contact zones characterized by multilingualism, trans-languaging and syncretic language practices.

Work in progress in anglophone postcolonial studies – including M.A./M.Ed., PhD and Postdoc projects as well as ongoing research projects in general – can be presented in the “Under Construction” section, for which poster presentations are also welcome.

This joint AELFE-TAPP Conference brings together the 19th annual conference of AELFE (Asociación Europea de Lenguas para Fines Específicos/European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes) and the 2nd Conference of the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP), a growing virtual exchange network that has developed transnational collaborative projects on specialised communication, translation and user experience. The combination of both conferences will allow participants to link the fields of languages for specific purposes (LSP) and telecollaboration/virtual exchange.

The annual AELFE Conference is a meeting point for scholars interested in academic and professional communication from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Royal Holloway, University of London seeks to appoint a Full time Lecturer to complement our strengths in Comparative Literatures and Cultures, World Literatures and Hispanic Studies from 27th April 2020.

The successful applicant will ideally have a PhD in an aspect of Hispanic Studies with a Comparative and/or World Literatures focus and have evidence of outstanding research potential. They should have a strong grounding in theoretical developments in Comparative and World Literatures. They should also have a strong and demonstrable commitment to teaching and a native or near-native command of spoken and written Spanish is desirable.

The 2020 edition of Languages & the Media, the 13th International Conference on Language Transfer in Audiovisual Media, will be riding the wave of recent trends that are fast becoming reality in audiovisual localisation.

The Department of French at University of Ghana is hosting the 2020 Autumn School for Translation Studies in Africa (ASTSA) from 08 to 12 June 2020 in Accra, Ghana.

The Department runs Masters programmes in both Translation and Conference Interpreting, supported by the EU/UNON Pan African Masters Consortium in Interpreting and Translation (PAMCIT) project. These two graduate programmes attract students from all over Africa with the aim of working towards an African agenda for training high-level professionals in translation and conference interpreting.

In 2020, an ASTSA Conference on 6 and 7 June 2020 will precede the Autumn School at the University of Ghana.

Literary Translation Workshop, Cameroon

Are you based in Cameroon? Are you a literary translator or do you want to be one?

Bakwa Magazine, in collaboration with the University of Bristol, is pleased to announce that applications are open for an exciting literary translation workshop aimed at building networks and sustainability for literary translators.

If you are a student translator or professional translator and you are from Cameroon and live in or can travel to Yaoundé, you are exactly who we are looking for.

The workshop, scheduled for 21-26 October 2019, will be co-facilitated by established literary translators Ros Schwartz, Georgina Collins, and Edwige Dro. Over the course of the workshop, you will attend a range of practical sessions introducing you to literary translation across genres and forms, as well as more theoretical issues. Participants will also work on translating a short story from the Bakwa Young Writers’ Workshop. After the workshop, you will be paired with an expert mentor who will work with you for ten weeks to complete your short story translation.

The Languages and Translation Studies subject group is seeking to make on appointment for a Teaching Associate in Translation Studies with Spanish for a fixed-term position between 15 January 2020 and 15 June 2020 (5 months). Strong candidates from Translation Studies, especially those with teaching experience in theory modules and a near-native competence in Spanish, are encouraged to apply.

You should have a completed a PG Programme in Translation Studies, have experience of teaching in Translation Studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and be able to contribute to the development of the teaching portfolio within Translation Studies. Experience in teaching translation theory is particularly important. The new appointment will also be expected to contribute to the leadership of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Translation Studies.

Parallèles publishes high-quality original research in translation and interpreting, as well as other forms of multilingual and multimodal communication. The journal is double-blind peer reviewed, open access and, since 2013, web-based only.

Parallèles is a multilingual journal. It welcomes contributions in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. The journal is published bi-annually – in April and October – and alternates between thematic and non-thematic issues. Special issue proposals are examined once a year. Parallèles is indexed with the main scientific databases, including the MLA International Bibliography (listed in the Directory of Periodicals), ERIH PLUS, TSB, BITRA and the Directory of Open Access Journals.
