Accommodation

The Local Organising Committee of the V IATIS Conference has made arrangements to provide accommodation offers to conference participants. Although limited in number, the accommodation options selected by the Local Organising Committee have taken into account two different locations, Savassi and Pampulha (see descriptions below), and a reasonable price range for Brazilian standards.

SAVASSI is a neighbourhood close to downtown Belo Horizonte, located approximately 12km from the UFMG Campus. Originally, a residential neighbourhood until the 1970s, it is now thriving with cafés, restaurants and situated within walking distant to the cultural circuit of Praça da Liberdade and Palácio das Artes with several options for cultural and evening entertainment.

PAMPULHA is a neighbourhood in the vicinity of the UFMG Campus and ideally located to those who want to avoid travelling back and forth between the hotel and the conference site. However, one should bear in mind that options for cultural and evening entertainment are rather limited around this neighbourhood.

Prices for all hotels include breakfast and daily transfers between the accommodation site and the conference venue, both in the morning (hotel/UFMG) and in the evening (UFMG/hotel)

To take advantage of the special rates arranged by the Local Organising Committee, accommodation must be booked directly per e-mail. Further information is available at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Here are the options:

Insurance coverage in case of cancellation

INSURANCE COVERAGE

Participants are strongly advised to take out an insurance policy to cover travel, accommodation and registration costs in case they have to cancel participation in the conference. There are plenty of insurance companies that cover not only cancellation costs for travel and accommodation but also for conference registration fees. Although this may increase your expense from the outset (by around 5%), it allows you to safely take advantage of the early-bird registration fee and to benefit from early-booked and non-cancellable airplane tickets and/or accommodation deals. Bear aware that most of these insurance coverages must be contracted on the very day you do the actual payment of your flight.

The Local Organising Committee leaves it up to delegates to compare insurances deals by themselves and opt out the possibility of recommending one or another. Delegates are welcome to use the conference Facebook page to share tips on accommodation, insurance and travel deals.

Conference Theme

Conference Theme

Multilingual and multimodal forms of interaction, prompted by material and symbolic exchanges in our increasingly globalized world, have brought new challenges to translation and intercultural studies. New technologies in the broadest sense of the word are sought by society in order to allow for a diversity of meanings to be created, exchanged, and disseminated on the basis of equality, complementarity and reciprocity. In this scenario, studies promoting and seeking innovation play a fundamental role in providing insights and solutions to meet those challenges.

The theme of the conference – ‘Innovation Paths in Translation and Intercultural Studies’ – is meant to foster exchanges and discussions on the topic.

Within the scope of IATIS 2015, innovation is understood in its broadest sense and includes not only new technological developments but also other relevant aspects, such as social and cultural innovation, including all forms of innovation which lead to changes in interactions and practices in translation and intercultural studies.

Related thematic areas include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Emergent practices in translation and intercultural studies
  • Innovative approaches in language policy and social transformation related to translation and intercultural studies
  • Innovative approaches to multilingualism, translation and intercultural studies
  • Innovative approaches to the study of style in translation
  • Innovative methodologies in the development of the profession, teaching and research
  • Innovation in collaborative research with other disciplines/domains
  • Innovation in audiovisual translation and media accessibility
  • Interaction of translators and interpreters with and through technology
  • New approaches to different modalities of interpreting and translation
  • New perspectives on the relationship between literature and translation
  • New trends in empirical-experimental research in translation and interpreting
  • Recent advances in signed and spoken language interpreting research, teaching and practice
  • Teaching innovation in the classroom, in curriculum design, in education policy
  • The role of electronic data bases and bibliographies in translation historiography
  • The use of IT in translation and interpreting research, teaching and practice
