The theme could be approached from the following example points of view:

• Working spaces and tools
• Economic states in the field
• The mental spaces of translating and interpreting

International Research School for Media Translation and Digital Culture

1-6 July 2019

The terms audiovisual translation, media translation and translation technologies have acquired and continue to enjoy great visibility in the field of translation studies. This research school will foster an open and wide-ranging take on media translation and digital culture, and the significance of both for and beyond translation studies; encourage cross-fertilization between the disciplinary sub-fields designated by the above terms; and address the new theoretical and methodological tools that translation scholars need in order to understand the strategic and catalyzing role played by translation in relation to a number of issues, including the following:

• Reconfiguring the ecology of networked media – from mainstream news organizations to citizen journalism outlets; from printed written articles to multimodal assemblages; from professional reportage to amateur coverage of conflicts and natural disasters;
• (Re)producing shifting public discourses about cosmopolitanism, gender, nation, expertise, fandom or activism – among other core issues;
• Developing more collaborative, participatory and deliberative processes of community formation, both online and on the ground;
• Enabling disciplinary discourses and developments in the fields of multimodality, media sociology, cultural studies, journalism, globalization studies and critical theories of communication technology.

The International Research School for Media Translation and Digital Culture is aimed at an international audience and will primarily address the needs of doctoral and early career researchers in translation and interpreting studies, as well as more experienced academics who are new to the discipline or interested in engaging with recent developments in the field. It aims to contribute to realizing one of the priorities of the Jiao Tong Baker Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies, namely, advancing the study of translation in the context of digital (audiovisual) media and online spaces.

The School will take place in Jiao Tong University, Shanghai once every two years, starting in July 2019 and rotating thereafter with the ARTIS International Research School.

The 10th International Symposium for Young Researchers in Translation, Interpreting, Intercultural Studies and East Asian Studies will be held on the 21st June 2019 at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

The deadline for the submission of abstracts is on March 11th, 2019. Abstracts must be submitted using the on-line form.

The 10th Symposium for Young Researchers is aimed at students who have recently begun their research as M.A. students, PhD students or those who have recently completed their PhD theses. The purpose of this symposium is to provide a scientific forum within which the next generation of researchers can exchange ideas and present their current research in the field of Translation, Interpreting, Intercultural Studies or East Asian Studies.

News Discourse and Translation

In contexts of globalization (or de-globalization), news discourse plays an indispensable role by disseminating meaning that is manufactured, constructed, or negotiated by news workers over the course of presentation or representation.

With Industry 4.0 in place, featuring “smart things” on various fronts, the amount of data to be processed has increased exponentially. This new era characterized by highly interactive and customized news stories further enforces changes in the way news discourse to be perceived and consumed.

Furthermore, translation has facilitated the instantaneity of news flow around the world by simultaneously addressing members of different linguistic and cultural communities through the Internet or mobile apps. It will undoubtedly serve to intensify or reduce or mediate the opposition and interaction between the global and the local.

Against this backdrop, news dissemination manifested in news discourse calls for investigations from the academia from more perspectives with more interdisciplinary approaches.

Call for papers

We invite contributions from researchers working within any theoretical or methodological or practical perspectives who are interested in the intersection between news media, discourse, language, translation, culture and communication to this conference. You may have 20-minute oral presentations that report original research related to the following themes of the conference which may include, but are not limited to:

Following the success of the three previous editions of the workshop on Multi-word Units in Machine Translation and Translation Technology (MUMTTT) we are announcing the fourth edition to be held in conjunction with the International Conference “Computational and Corpus-based Phraseology’ (Europhras’2019)” which is jointly organised by the European Association for Phraseology EUROPHRAS, the University of Malaga (Research Group in Lexicography and Translation), the University of Wolverhampton (Research Group in Computational Linguistics) and the Association for Computational Linguistics – Bulgaria.
The MUMTTT workshop will be held on the last day of the Europhras’2019 conference, namely on 27th September 2019. It will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in the fields of (Computational) Linguistics, (Computational) Phraseology, Translation Studies and Translation Technology to discuss recent advances in the area of multi-word unit processing and to coordinate research efforts across disciplines in order to improve the integration of multi-word units in machine translation and translation technology tools.

The MUMTTT 2019 workshop invites the submission of papers reporting on original and unpublished research on topics related to MWU processing in machine translation and translation technology, including:

- Lexical, syntactic, semantic and translational aspects in MWU representation
- Theoretical approaches to MWUs (e.g., collostructional analysis of MWU, cognitive approaches to processing MWUs, etc.)
- Development of multilingual MWU resources
-Identification and acquisition of MWUs and variants
-Learning semantic information about MWUs from monolingual, parallel or comparable corpora
-Development and use of MWU resources in machine translation and translation technology
-Development of corpora for the extraction and translation of MWUs
-Compilation of resources for the extraction and translation of multiword units
-Creation of MWU-annotated corpora with a focus on translation aspects
-Paraphrasing of MWUs applied to the improvement of machine translation
-MWUs and word alignment techniques
-MWUs in machine translation
-MUWs in translation memory systems
-MUWs in term extraction
-MWU-centred machine translation evaluation
-Evaluation of MWU translation

-Multilingualism and MWU processing

Submission Guidelines
Submissions must consist of full-text papers and should not exceed 7 pages excluding references.
A selection of papers will be invited to submit an extended version for the second volume of Multiword Units in Machine Translation and Translation Technology to be published by John Benjamins by the end of 2019.
They must be formatted according to the ACL 2017 style guidelines available both for Word and LaTeX text processor. Each submission will be reviewed by at least three programme committee members. Accepted papers will be presented orally or as posters, as determined by the programme committee. There will be no distinction in the workshop proceedings between papers presented orally or as posters. The proceedings will be published both as e-proceedings with ISSN and as an electronic volume with ISBN and will be made available at the time of the conference. The submissions will be maintained by conference management software. Details about the submission page will be provided in the second call for papers.

The Germanic Society for Forensic Linguistics (GSFL) is pleased to announce its SECOND call for papers for its 7th annual conference to be held from September 5-8, 2019 in Graz, Austria. This year’s conference is being held in conjunction with the University of Graz (AUSTRIA). The issue will go live on Friday, September 27, 5pm ahead of International Translation Day.

There is no deadline for non-thematic issue, as the papers are published on an ongoing basis.

Author Guidelines

All contributions should be submitted as RTF attachment, follow APA referencing style and be accompanied by: a statement of authorship; copyright clearance where required; a 200-word abstract and a 100-word biographical note.

In terms of word limit:

a) non-thematic and thematic essays should be between 3000 and 5000 words;

b) interviews should be between 2000 and 3000 words;

c) translations should be up to 1500 words regardless of genre;

d) book reviews should be up to 2000 words;

e) captions have no prescribed word limit. Relevant images are welcomed and should be 300 dpi and copyright-clear.

The Institute of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking to appoint a

Professor (f/m) of Translation and Interpreting studies

(40 hours per week; permanent employment according to the Austrian Law on Salaried Employment (AngG); expected starting date January 1st 2020 )

The successful candidate will be expected to represent the Institute’s Research Focus “Translation, Migration and Minorities”. She/he conducts theoretical and empirical research on translation in the contexts of ethno-cultural diversity, migration and/or social diversity. Her/his research is innovative, internationally visible, and interdisciplinary and explores translation and/or interpreting as historical and/or topical fields of tensions against the background of ideological, political, social and/or cultural barriers. Her/his research projects constitute significant contributions to the development of this Research Focus. In her/his research-based teaching s/he will cover a wide range of translation and interpreting studies topics and will teach courses on the Institute’s bachelor’s and master’s programmes and teach on the Faculty’s doctoral programme. S/he will supervise bachelor’s and master’s as well as doctoral theses in translation and interpreting studies. S/he will assume administrative responsibilities within the Institute and the Faculty.

Requirements for employment

• Completion of an appropriate university degree at a university in Austria or abroad
• Habilitation or equivalent qualification in Translation and/or Interpreting Studies or other disciplines related to the described area of research
• Excellent scientific qualification in research and teaching for the relevant subject (relative to academic age)Internationally visible research activities (publications, conferences)
• Pertinent work experience abroad after Master's degree
• Experience with acquisition of third-party funds
• Management and leadership experience, communication skills and cooperative leadership style
