The main responsibility of the post holder will be to contribute to the teaching and research activity of the Division of English Language and Applied Linguistics, especially in delivering modules on postgraduate degree programmes (both on campus and by distance learning), and also contributing to the development of research postgraduate activity. Some administrative duties will be involved. The appointed person will also be expected to undertake research of an international standard. Main Duties To deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities within the specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism to undergraduates and post graduates, predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars, but also through methods appropriate to distance learning, so that the School’s teaching objectives are met. Its staff includes internationally-respected authorities in many branches of English language studies, broadly conceived (from narratology to corpus linguistics), Applied Linguistics, and in all the major periods and writers of the literature (from Chaucer to J.G.Ballard). We run several taught Masters programmes in TEFL, Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (both on campus and at distance), and approximately 40 students are completing doctorates under our supervision at any point in time. The undergraduate body comprises approximately 100 single honours and 100 joint honours students in each of the three years. Our single honours programmes include a Single Honours and Joint Honours programme in English Language as well as programmes focusing on English Literature. There is a lively research culture here, in many aspects of discourse studies, language learning and teaching, and corpus linguistics. The IIS secondary curriculum seeks to educate young adults in the faith, history and cultures of Muslim peoples through a multidisciplinary, civilisational and humanistic approach to the study of Islam, including history, social studies, the arts, architecture, literature, science, and philosophy. The curriculum materials are translated into a number of languages. The Translations Officer will undertake the day-to-day operations for the coordination of the translation of secondary materials from English into Arabic, French, Gujarati, Urdu, and Tajik and other languages. The Officer will coordinate the translation process from manuscript to printing. The postholder will also ensure that all translations meet readability and pedagogical standards at the secondary level and take into account cultural sensitivities. Responsibilities will include constructing a plan for translations, recruitment of contractual translators and reviewers, working closely with community stakeholders, tracking translations, assisting with the final editing and formatting of materials and ensuring that translations meet budgets and timelines. Duties may also include translating materials in the candidate’s language(s) of expertise. Ideal candidates will possess a graduate degree in Translation Studies, Linguistics or other language related discipline. Familiarity of one or more of the languages will be an asset. Candidates will have experience in coordinating translation projects, preferably in a publishing environment, excellent administrative and organisational skills along with good interpersonal skills.
