In a privileged location on the U.S.-Mexico border, next to the Gulf of Mexico, and within a bicultural, bilingual campus community, UTB-TSC has been offering Translation and Interpreting courses for more than three decades. UTB-TSC currently offers an Associate of Arts program in Spanish Translation, a Bachelor of Arts Major in Spanish Translation and Interpreting, a Minor in French Language and Translation, and an undergraduate Certificate in Medical Interpreting. At the graduate level, UTB offers a Certificate in Translation Studies as well as a full-fledged Master of Arts program in Spanish Translation and Interpreting. With more than 150 declared students in these programs, no less than a dozen different courses and sections in T&I are offered every semester, ranging from foundation, sophomore courses in Translation to specialized courses in Legal Translation, Simultaneous Interpreting, Audiovisual Translation, Translation Technologies, Finance and Business Translation and Literary Translation, among others. Ability to teach Translation Technologies is preferred. Strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching of Spanish Translation and Interpreting. Education: Ph.D. in Translation Studies or Spanish with a closely related area of specialization is required. 18+ Graduate credit hours in French, Italian, German, Japanese, Chinese or Arabic a plus. ABD status may exceptionally be considered. Native or near-native command of English & Spanish required. Experience: Candidates must provide evidence of an active scholarly agenda and commitment to teaching excellence in the field of Translation Studies and T&I Training. Candidates must have strong organizational skills and willingness to participate in the growth, expansion and coordination of the existing programs. Each block involves up to four two-hour practical translation classes per week, and lasts for five weeks. In each case, the teaching would be suitable for one single visiting lecturer or could alternatively be shared between more people to allow for different visiting lecturers' specialisations. In addition, visiting lecturers will be expected to supervise and mark longer translation projects (for an extra fee), and to set and mark an examination. The basic rate of pay is £115.56 per two-hour session. The appointments will be for one year in the first instance. Its staff includes internationally-respected authorities in many branches of English language studies, broadly conceived (from narratology to corpus linguistics), Applied Linguistics, and in all the major periods and writers of the literature (from Chaucer to J.G.Ballard). We run several taught Masters programmes in TEFL, Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (both on campus and at distance), and approximately 40 students are completing doctorates under our supervision at any point in time. The undergraduate body comprises approximately 100 single honours and 100 joint honours students in each of the three years. The IIS secondary curriculum seeks to educate young adults in the faith, history and cultures of Muslim peoples through a multidisciplinary, civilisational and humanistic approach to the study of Islam, including history, social studies, the arts, architecture, literature, science, and philosophy. The curriculum materials are translated into a number of languages. The Translations Officer will undertake the day-to-day operations for the coordination of the translation of secondary materials from English into Arabic, French, Gujarati, Urdu, and Tajik and other languages. The Officer will coordinate the translation process from manuscript to printing. The postholder will also ensure that all translations meet readability and pedagogical standards at the secondary level and take into account cultural sensitivities. Responsibilities will include constructing a plan for translations, recruitment of contractual translators and reviewers, working closely with community stakeholders, tracking translations, assisting with the final editing and formatting of materials and ensuring that translations meet budgets and timelines. Duties may also include translating materials in the candidate’s language(s) of expertise. Ideal candidates will possess a graduate degree in Translation Studies, Linguistics or other language related discipline. Familiarity of one or more of the languages will be an asset. Candidates will have experience in coordinating translation projects, preferably in a publishing environment, excellent administrative and organisational skills along with good interpersonal skills.
