CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS EMUNI Translation Studies Doctoral and Teacher Training Summer School 23 June – 7 July 2012, Portorož, Slovenia Guest Lecturer 2012: Dr. Michaela Wolf, University of Graz The more than 300 MA programmes in translation across Europe indicate that there is both a great need to provide high-level doctoral study for prospective teachers and a pressing need to continuously provide teacher training to existing translation teachers in order to keep them up to date with the latest developments in the field. The EMUNI Translation Studies Doctoral Summer School and Teacher Training Summer School, a joint initiative by 7 different universities (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia; Boğaziçi University, Turkey; University of Turku, Finland; University of East Finland, Finland; University of Granada, Spain; Pablo de Olavide University, Seville, Spain; and EMUNI, Portorož, Slovenia), responds to this need by focusing, in particular, on contemporary research into literary and non-literary works from a historical perspective. Participation will be limited to a maximum of 30 individuals; particularly welcome are doctoral students in the early stages of their projects, teachers of translation at MA level or its equivalent and other academics, as well as professionals who are involved in research in translation and interpreting studies or in other doctoral fields where translation, interpreting or intercultural mediation is a focus of interest. Basic activities at the EMUNI Summer School: a) Critical discussion of the most current approaches to translation theory, paying particular attention to contemporary research into literary and non-literary works from a historical perspective. b) Presentation and critical discussion of different methodological approaches in TS, focusing in particular on researching the translation of literary and non-literary texts in historical TS from the perspective of historical and sociological studies, or through the use of ethnological and corpus approaches. c) A series of lectures by the guest lecturer. d) Teacher-training in the field of translator training, with a particular emphasis on curriculum and syllabus design, definition of objectives and learning outcomes, trainee and trainer profiles, ICT resources, classroom dynamics and assessment. e) Tutorials for doctoral students and young researchers. f) A graduate conference. The Taboo Conference – TaCo2012 Forlì (Italy), 25-27 October 2012 http://taco2012.sitlec.unibo.it Call for papers In a world that seems continuously to be pushing the envelope of what is acceptable to the inhabitants of specific linguistic and cultural contexts, this interdisciplinary conference acknowledges the importance of investigating taboos and their reinforcement/breaking in various areas of language, culture and society, and across different cultures. We propose to explore the delicate balance and subtle boundaries between the need for inclusion and respect for different ethnic, religious, sexual, etc. backgrounds – which seems to be at the basis of modern multicultural societies – and a (un)conscious push towards the breaking of existing taboos, for example for shock value, as in the case of humour. In such context, investigation of the linguistic, cultural, social, institutional and personal implications of taboo reinforcement/breaking appears of extreme value. The Languages of FilmsDubbing, acquisition and methodology14-15 September 2012University of Pavia CALL FOR PAPERS This conference aims to offer an original contribution to research on audiovisualtranslation and language learning from a descriptive and a methodologicalperspective by focussing on the specificities of original and dubbed film dialogue.The main themes which will be investigated during the conference include linguisticaspects of original and dubbed film dialogue, the representation of conversation onthe screen and the role of original and dubbed audiovisual input in second/foreignlanguage acquisition. The Process Series will present staged readings of four theatrical translations: Huddersfield by Uglijisa Stilnac, translated and adapted by Caridad Svich; Vengeance Can Wait by Yukiko Montoya, translated and adapted by Kyoko Yoshida/Andy Bragen; The Ballad of the Pine Tree Killers by Rebecca Kricheldorf, translated by Neil Blackadder; and Apocalypse Tomorrow by Ricardo Monti, translated by Jean Graham-Jones. Andy Bragen, Neil Blackadder, and Jean Graham-Jones will be in residence to rehearse the readings, and will discuss their work as translators in the creative process. The Conference will be organized following the “Open Space” model in which there are no prepared papers or presentations, but every person attending can propose a topic for discussion. Translation Group at Imperial College London Saturday 26th November Respeaking Workshop There are places available for the Respeaking workshop being held by the Translation Group at Imperial College on the 26th November. This is open to professionals as well as students. Course Content The course will start with an introduction to the different methods used to produce live subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing viewers and a presentation of respeaking (live subtitling through speech recognition) and the different ways in which it is implemented professionally around the world. This theoretical part of the course will finish with an overview of speech recognition and how it is used in live subtitling and accessibility in general. In the practical part the course participants will first of all become familiarised with the use of the speech recognition software Dragon Naturally Speaking, which will have to be set up so that it can be used for live subtitling. Participants will then start practising the different skills required for respeaking (dictation speed, split-attention, use of vocal commands, rhythm, etc.) with videos from sports programmes, news and interviews. A list of links, useful websites and other sources of information will be given to all the participants at the end of the course.
