3rd International Translation Studies Conference "Translation: New Destinations"

  3rd International Translation Studies Conference « Translation: New Destinations » Istanbul, 08-10 May 2013 Yıldız Technical University Faculty of Science and Letters Department of French Translation and Interpreting   Call for Papers: On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Department of French Translation and Interpreting is organizing an international translation studies conference in order to provide a framework for discussing new destinations in translation studies.   Translation, an impetus for human evolution, is one of the most important subject matters in academic research in line with innovations of our era. Going beyond imposing limits, translation studies is enriched by new perspectives and travels to new destinations. Considering translation as a multifaceted concept which involves numerous parameters, this conference proposes the opportunity to explore theoretical and practical issues in translation with innovative points of view, to analyze the nature of present-day problematics and develop possible solutions. Papers will be 20 minutes with a further 10 minutes of discussion and are to be presented in French, English and Turkish. Seminar: Exploiting Emerging Technologies to Prepare Interpreters and their Clients for Professional Practice

Context: The rise of migration and multilingualism in Europe requires professional interpreters in business, legal, medical and many other settings. Future interpreters therefore need to master an ever broadening range of interpreting skills. This is difficult to achieve with traditional teaching methods and in times of reduced teaching contact hours. Also, in many emerging interpreting scenarios, a client-side understanding of how to work with an interpreter is crucial, but efforts to educate clients are scarce and normally separate from interpreter education. ICT-based solutions have been employed in interpreter training to make teaching resources such as audio or video clips available and easily reusable. As a more advanced solution, virtual learning environments, i.e. remote or online learning and teaching facilities, have been developed to overcome problems of trainer availability and to offer more flexibility for learners. The effective integration of such solutions into everyday learning and teaching is still a point of contention, but at the same time, a new generation of ICT-based tools and platforms (e.g. Web 2.0, social software and 3D virtual environments), with the potential to provide more dynamic and comprehen­sive support for learning and teaching, is rapidly growing in popularity. These solutions enable users - including learners from different contexts such as interpreting students and their potential clients (e.g. law students) - to meet and interact in virtual educational spaces, thus fostering experiential and autonomous learning, and different forms of learner collaboration. Equally important, given the increasing use of different forms of ICT-based and ‘remote’ interpreting, the use of emerging technologies in training contexts will also help interpreting students and their clients acquire digital competence and prepare them for an important aspect of future professional practice. "Narration and Translation": An International Workshop in Ghent, Belgium

On the one hand, the workshop focuses on the relevance of studying translations in the context of narrative theory. It seems somehow self-evident that narrative theory can draw on the translations of literary narratives and that the translation does not affect the way in which the text should be analyzed. Still, significant shifts can occur on the level of narrative strategies, when a text is translated into another language. Ways in which perspective or narrative voice are rendered can vary from language to language. This is not just a matter of stylistic features, but also of narrative features. In this respect, the workshop wants to specify the narratological relevance of examining translations. On the other hand, the workshop will explore how the models developed in narrative theory can enrich the study of translations. Translation scholars have long campaigned for increased recognition of the translator’s voice in the study of translated fiction. Among other things, this has resulted in attempts to broaden existing models of narrative communication to account for the presence of the translator in narrative fiction. Ironically, however, the calls for greater awareness of the translator’s involvement were issued at a moment when postclassical approaches to narrative were challenging anthropomorphic conceptions of authorship implied by traditional (structuralist and rhetorical) approaches to narrative. The workshop aims to show how these new developments in postclassical narratology may be inserted in ongoing debates about the translator’s discursive presence in translated narrative. More generally, the workshop will examine how narrative analysis can be implemented in translation studies and in comparative analyses of translations.    Keynote speakers are Theo Hermans (University College London) and Gerald Prince (University of Pennsylvania). Nordic Translation Conference 2013

The conference will look at literary and non-literary translation of all kinds, including interpreting and subtitling, both between various Nordic languages and also between English and the Nordic languages. Nordic here includes Danish, Faroese, Finnish, Greenlandic, Icelandic, Norwegian, any of the Sámi dialects, and Swedish. Topics can include, but are not limited to, specific linguistic issues involved in translation/interpretation between two or more languages, analysis of particular texts/genres, professional issues, translating texts by or about minority groups, the translator/interpreter’s role, and the effect of cultural similarities/differences among Nordic countries. In addition, the conference will include several workshops on relevant topics, such as working with specific languages or kinds of texts, using computer tools, finding reference materials, and so on. Those interested in running workshops are also invited to submit proposals. Please send proposals (250-400 words) for workshops and conference papers by 25 August 2012 to B.J. “Did anyone say Power?”: Rethinking Domination and Hegemony in Translation

In view of Jean Baudrillard’s suggestion that any theory of power, in order to be ethically credible, must distinguish between relations of dominance and hegemony, we hope to bring together researchers, PhD-students, translators, writers and activists from varying backgrounds to engage in a discussion about the impact of power on the theory and practice of translation as well as on our own critical reflections.    Potential topics for abstract proposals Apart from paper proposals, we are open to suggestions for a range of discussion formats such as poster presentations or audio-recorded roundtables. We are particularly interested in reflections on the ideological effects of technological change on translation theory and practice, whether in the present or future. First Durham Postgraduate Colloquium

From J. Holmes’s paper of 1978 to G. Toury’s work on defining Descriptive Translation Studies of 1995, the last forty years of research in Translation Studies has often been focused on research methodology and systematization of knowledge. The colloquium intends to be an opportunity for peers, MA candidates and PhD researchers, to share their views on the methodology of research they are adopting for testing the hypothesis of their original research ideas and innovative investigations. The primary focus of the colloquium is on the methodological issues faced when setting up an original piece of research in Translation Studies. What are we studying? How are we studying it? What are the technical challenges of our research methodologies and our data collection? What are our concerns regarding data reliability? How do interdisciplinary methodologies contribute to shaping and changing our research focus? The fast pace at which the field of Translation Studies has developed in the last twenty years makes it almost an anomaly in Arts and Humanities as much of the research currently carried out under the umbrella term of Translation Studies adopts an increasing number of approaches from a spectrum of disciplines including the social sciences and computing sciences. Constructing a sound methodology is the aim of all research postgraduates and this colloquium intends to provide a forum for debate with peers and experts,offering the opportunity to share approaches and concerns with an impact which goes beyond individual research projects. Papers should engage with issues of methodology in the widest possible sense. Papers are expected to last 15 minutes so as to have 10 minutes for questions. Papers can only be accepted in English. The convenors are Denise Filmer and Sarah Weaver of Durham University, UK. A Scientific Committee will be involved in the selection of the papers for the conference. 4th Graduate Student Conference in Translation Studies

Translation can offer a space of mediation, a space characterized by an ethic of linguistic and cultural hospitality in which there is reciprocal recognition of the differences of the other, a space in which the translator is not an invisible, passive medium through which a message is conveyed, but rather an active agent and mediator in intercultural, inter-linguistic encounters. This conference, therefore, seeks to provide a forum to explore questions such as: Can the translator remain invisible in this new global reality? Is it desirable for the translator to remain invisible given the rapid evolution of the global situation? What role can the translator play in challenging the ethnocentrism that perpetuates asymmetrical power relations between languages and cultures?  How does the identity of the translator – varied loyalties, multiple allegiances – promote (or hinder the promotion of) notions of dialogue and reciprocity?  What new avenues for research can be opened up by the notion of reciprocity, given the interdisciplinary nature of translation studies? These and other related issues will be addressed at this one-day trilingual event, which will include a series of individual presentations (20 minutes each) and a panel discussion of professors from various universities.  Interested persons are invited to submit proposals of 250-300 words in English, French or Spanish by Monday, October 22, 2012 to conf2013@glendon.yorku.ca.
