Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting Studies

Applications are invited for a full time Lecturer position in Interpreting and Translation Studies within the Cardiff School of Modern Languages. You will pursue excellence in research, teaching and engagement, and inspire others to do the same.

You will deliver high-quality, research-led teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and lead on the development of Interpreting Studies within the School's programmes. You will contribute to the School's record of research excellence by producing high-quality peer reviewed research publications, successful research funding applications, and work with impact beyond the higher education sector.

This position is full time (35 hours per week) and is open-ended.

Salary: £40,523 - £46,924 per annum (Grade 7)

Job Description

The post-holder will pursue excellence in research, teaching and engagement, and inspire others to do the same. She/he will deliver high-quality, research-led teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and lead on the development of Interpreting Studies within the School's programmes. He/she will contribute to the School's record of research excellence by producing high-quality peer reviewed research publications, successful research funding applications, and work with impact beyond the higher education sector.

Research

To conduct research within Interpreting and Translation Studies and contribute to research profile of the School and University by the production of research outputs including publishing high-quality peer-reviewed academic works; bidding successfully for grant funding; and participating in high-impact conferences.

To recruit and supervise postgraduate taught and research students.

To independently develop research objectives, projects and proposals for individual and collaborative research including research funding.

To develop and maintain research networks through regular national/international conference/ seminar presentations.

To contribute to and develop theSchool research culture and its programme of activities.

Teaching

To contribute to module and curriculum development in Interpreting and translation at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a particular emphasis on developing the interpreting studies content within the existing programmes.

To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking papers and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University.

To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Masters students, the co-supervision of Postgraduate research students and acting as a Postgraduate progress review panel member as required.

To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students

Other

To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally, nationally and internationally to raise the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.

To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world, including attendance at open days and other recruitment events. Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience, along with a Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2. Native, or near-native proficiency in two or more languages, apart from English.

An established track-record of expertise and portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience in any area of Interpreting and Translation Studies. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates researching in the following fields: Applied Interpreting Studies Research, Theoretical Interpreting Studies Research, Interdisciplinary Interpreting Studies Research

Significant teaching experience at a high level of quality at undergraduate / postgraduate level, including familiarity with TRADOS software, or willingness to undertake training in the area.

Emerging international reputation and profile within the academic field, along with a growing record of high-quality, peer reviewed publications.

Evidence of the potential to obtain competitive research funding along with strong future plans for success in research funding awards.

Ability to contribute to, and lead, the development and delivery of modules in the Translation Studies programme and beyond within the school. The candidate needs to have experience of teaching delivery and curriculum design in Interpreting Studies at degree-level.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
Proven ability in clear and effective communication

Evidence of a strong track-record of collaborative teamwork with academic and administrative staff colleagues. The candidate should also show willingness to lead on administration and coordination tasks and duties across relevant programmes.The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances, and to act as a personal tutor.

Desirable Criteria

Evidence of collaborations with industry

Proven ability to work without close supervision and experience in doctoral programme leadership and design

Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community

Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School

High-level German language proficiency.
