Stefan Baumgarten

Embracing the thematic focus of “History – Translation – Politics,” this conference foregrounds the understanding of translation and interpreting as historically and politically contextualized activities that can potentially bring about cultural and social transfer and transformation. It probes the influence of politics on these activities while also exploring how translation politics can act as a catalyst for change within specific settings. Building upon the premise that translation is not only an essential element of historical analysis but also a historically situated practice, we welcome submissions that delve into the roles of translators, interpreters, and other pertinent institutions as agents or subjects of transformation. Additionally, we invite contributions that investigate instances of translation and interpreting that both instigate modifications within prevailing economic, political, religious, or social power dynamics and face constraints imposed by them, as well as contributions discussing the methodological added value of translation/interpreting as a lens into history.

Als Fortsetzung der 2022 stattgefundenen Denkwerkstatt „Übersetzen in der DDR“ laden wir herzlich zur Tagung „Translationskultur der DDR“ ein./We cordially invite you to the conference “Translation Culture(s) of the GDR” as a continuation of the conference “Translating in the GDR” that was held in Berlin in 2022.

We kindly invite interested scholars and practitioners to submit paper proposals for a conference session track the theme of Digitalization as a Transformational Force for Transcultural Communication. The session forms part of the conference Critical Issues in Science, Technology and Society Studies, to be held from 3-5 May 2021 in Graz.

This digital session will bring together scholars and practitioners from the fields of Translation and Interpreting Studies as well as researchers working with theories, methods and heuristics from Science, Technology and Society Studies.

The session will be organised alongside three different but interconnected formats: We will begin with some classical presentations (20 minutes per presentation), followed by two brief ‘polemical’ positioning papers (10 minutes per paper), and the session will be concluded by a panel discussion.

We welcome abstracts either for 20-minute-presentations, or for 10-minute-positioning papers. The concluding panel discussion among the participants will further encourage interdisciplinary debate on the session topic, leading to a possible joint publication.

Abstracts (max. 300 words) should include name and affiliation, presentation format, title and five keywords. Please send your abstract as a Word document by February 22nd 2021 to the following three email addresses simultaneously:
