Research Fellow, Monash Suzhou Science and Technology Research Institute / Lecturer (Adjunct) Monash University

The Opportunity Monash University is honoured to be the first Australian university to receive a licence to operate in China, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies, via the partnership at Suzhou with the Southeast University (SEU), one of China’s key national universities as well as the establishment of Monash Suzhou. The SEU-Monash partnership consists of the Joint Research Institute (JRI) and the Joint Graduate School (JGS), and will produce postgraduates and researchers with ideas to change people’s lives in the region and the world for the better. The JRI conducts multi-disciplinary research projects in areas of strategic importance to industry in Australia and China. To facilitate the collaboration, Monash established The Monash Suzhou Science and Technology Research Institute (MSSTRI) and currently has five priority research themes that address strategic issues of mutual interest, including: Advanced computation in science and engineering;advanced materials and manufacturing;energy and environment;future cities; andlife sciences.We are seeking an individual passionate about undertaking research in Translation Studies as well as multidisciplinary research through the application of Translation Studies to problems in one or more of the five research themes above. You will also be responsible for teaching Chinese-English interpreting and translation units that form part of the Double Masters in Interpreting and Translation Studies in the JGS, and supervision of graduate research students at Master and PhD level. To be successful in this position you will have completed a doctoral qualification in Translation Studies, or related discipline area together with subsequent research and teaching experience; a record of publications and high-level technical skills and abilities. An appropriately qualified appointee will be offered an honorary adjunct appointment as a Lecturer with the Faculty of Arts of Monash University, to be held conjointly with the appointment as Research Fellow, MSSTRI. Spanish Lecturer A, University of Surrey

The School of Literature and Languages is a vibrant and innovative School with an international research and teaching portfolio in Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting Studies, Modern Languages, English Literature and Creative Writing, and Intercultural Communication. Modern Languages at Surrey was ranked no 8 in in the Guardian University Guide 2022 and Iberian Languages and French were positioned at 8 and 9 respectively in The Time Good University Guide 2022. We are seeking exceptional academics whose ambitions in both research and teaching complement those of our forward-looking School. We seek to appoint a Lecturer A in Spanish to consolidate our teaching of Spanish as part of our Modern Languages programme, to take part in our research environment in relevant areas across the school and to add to our research productivity, and to develop and contribute to our impact and public engagement activities. A particular interest in Peninsular Spanish (sociolinguistics, translation, or culture and society) would be an advantage. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and innovative subject team, with strong teaching and research specialisms in related areas such as sociolinguistics, translation and interpreting studies, transnationalism, comparative literature and mobility. Professor of Language and Translation Spanish, Venice, Italy

Ca’ Foscari is looking for a Full Professor of Language and Translation – Spanish with a cutting edge research profile. The researcher should also have a strong commitment to teaching new generations of students so that they can become game-changers in their own fields and make a difference in the world.  Teaching duties and research: The Professor will teach in courses of Spanish and Translation from Spanish, at undergraduate and postgraduate level for a minimum of 120 teaching hours and will coordinate and supervise the activities of Foreign Language Assistants in Spanish, according to the current regulations.  The professor will have to contribute to the consolidation and development of research in the fields of Spanish language, Spanish morphosyntax and discourse variationist studies, in the field of language change and sociolinguistic accommodation processes in Spanish Language and Language history, in Dialectology (both synchronically and diachronically), and Lexicology (including a contrastive approach). Postdoctoral Researcher Project: Multilingual Island: Sites of Translation and Encounter (MISTE), University of Galway

The National University of Ireland Galway is recruiting a full-time, fixed term Postdoctoral Researcher for the project Multilingual Island: Sites of Translation and Encounter (MISTE). The project takes a ‘shared island’ approach to create an in-depth understanding of intercultural encounters in Ireland through the lens of language and translation, comparing settings in Galway and Belfast. The position is funded under the North-South Research Programme. The successful candidate will be expected to start on 1 January 2023. Project Description This project will measure multilingual practices to investigate the role of translation in bringing together migrants/refugees and local communities; and to explore the creative potential of translation to raise awareness of cultural diversity in Ireland. The project compares approaches to language and migrant/refugee integration in different sites with a view to informing policy and best practice. Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Japanese, San Diego State University

The Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages at San Diego State University (SDSU) seeks to hire a tenure-track Professor of Japanese at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in fall 2023. The candidate is expected to have native or near-native proficiency in Japanese in addition to strong proficiency in English.The ideal candidate will pursue research in Japanese language, linguistics, culture, or literature, and demonstrate potential for substantial contributions to the field. Possible areas of specialization include the acquisition and teaching of Japanese as a second/foreign language, the acquisition and teaching of Japanese as a heritage language, Japanese linguistics, Japanese literature and culture, and Japanese cultural studies. The successful candidate should have a proven track record of teaching undergraduate courses in Japanese that is grounded in communicative language teaching and possess knowledge of current trends in second/foreign language teaching methodologies and new technologies in language learning. The candidate must be able to teach all levels of Japanese language courses. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the expertise to teach two or more upper-division courses that are part of the Japanese major, such as Business Japanese, Newspaper Reading and Advanced Composition, and Japanese Literature through Text and Film. We are especially interested in candidates who demonstrate strong potential to collaborate effectively with existing faculty to manage and grow the Japanese Language Program, which includes a Japanese major and minor, and to maintain the program’s ties with relevant units across the university. Assistant Professor Machine Translation, University of Leiden

Leiden University is looking for an assistant professor to conduct research and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Machine Translation in Leiden. The lecturer will hold a position within the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics and teach courses as needed in the BA programme Linguistics, the MA programme Linguistics (specialization Computational Linguistics and specialization Translation), and the Minor programme Translation. Key responsibilities Developing, teaching, and co-ordinating courses on Machine Translation and Computational Linguistics. The position will have a focus on adaptivity in machine translation: adaptivity to specific end-user groups (such as refugees or people with low-literacy), specific contexts (e.g. medical or legal translation, or creative and literary translation) or specific media (i.e. MT in audio-visual translation).
