Lecturer in French or Francophone Studies, Lancaster University, UK

The Department of Languages and Cultures at Lancaster University seeks to appoint a Lecturer in French or Francophone Studies for a January 2023 start. The post will require teaching and convenorship in core and specialist undergraduate courses in Modern French or Francophone Studies as well as engaging in comparative modules, postgraduate teaching and supervising research students. This post is research-active, which will involve the development of a personal research programme in an aspect of Modern French or Francophone Studies or comparative studies with French or Francophone Studies as a central aspect and the seeking of research funding, leading to publications in key international peer-reviewed academic journals and to other appropriate forms of research output. Academic administrative activities within the Department and engagement in our research culture are also part of this role. Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Japanese, San Diego State University

The Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages at San Diego State University (SDSU) seeks to hire a tenure-track Professor of Japanese at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in fall 2023. The candidate is expected to have native or near-native proficiency in Japanese in addition to strong proficiency in English.The ideal candidate will pursue research in Japanese language, linguistics, culture, or literature, and demonstrate potential for substantial contributions to the field. Possible areas of specialization include the acquisition and teaching of Japanese as a second/foreign language, the acquisition and teaching of Japanese as a heritage language, Japanese linguistics, Japanese literature and culture, and Japanese cultural studies. The successful candidate should have a proven track record of teaching undergraduate courses in Japanese that is grounded in communicative language teaching and possess knowledge of current trends in second/foreign language teaching methodologies and new technologies in language learning. The candidate must be able to teach all levels of Japanese language courses. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the expertise to teach two or more upper-division courses that are part of the Japanese major, such as Business Japanese, Newspaper Reading and Advanced Composition, and Japanese Literature through Text and Film. We are especially interested in candidates who demonstrate strong potential to collaborate effectively with existing faculty to manage and grow the Japanese Language Program, which includes a Japanese major and minor, and to maintain the program’s ties with relevant units across the university. Assistant Professor Machine Translation, University of Leiden

Leiden University is looking for an assistant professor to conduct research and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Machine Translation in Leiden. The lecturer will hold a position within the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics and teach courses as needed in the BA programme Linguistics, the MA programme Linguistics (specialization Computational Linguistics and specialization Translation), and the Minor programme Translation. Key responsibilities Developing, teaching, and co-ordinating courses on Machine Translation and Computational Linguistics. The position will have a focus on adaptivity in machine translation: adaptivity to specific end-user groups (such as refugees or people with low-literacy), specific contexts (e.g. medical or legal translation, or creative and literary translation) or specific media (i.e. MT in audio-visual translation). Lecturer in Translation Studies (Arabic)

The University of Strathclyde seeks to appoint a Lecturer to join our Translation and Interpreting subject team, on a full-time open-ended contract. The post holder will teach primarily on the MSc Applied Translation programme and will be located at MEU in Amman during the teaching semesters. They will also contribute to postgraduate feedback, marking and supervision at Strathclyde, remotely and in person as circumstances permit. Candidates will have a good honours degree and PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline and will have a native or near native level of fluency in both spoken and written English and Arabic. They will also demonstrate a body of research in high quality publications, demonstrating standards of excellence in any area of translation and interpreting studies. Assistant Professor in Peninsular Spanish and Translation Studies, Nottingham University

We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Peninsular Spanish and Translation Studies to make a significant impact within the teaching and research areas of Peninsular Spanish Studies and Translation Studies in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures is one of three departments within the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies. The School is a leading centre for the study of Modern Languages and Cultures offering first degrees (BA) and both taught and research postgraduate degrees, delivering internationally recognised research across our departments. We also work closely with The University of Nottingham’s campuses in China and Malaysia. Within the School and Department, the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies Section provides a wide range of teaching and research expertise: we work within and across disciplines that include history, literary studies, translation studies, cultural studies, queer studies, cultural history, critical theory and visual cultures, and across contexts that include Spain, Cuba (including the Centre for Research on Cuba), Peru and other Spanish-speaking contexts; and Portugal, Brazil and other Lusophone contexts. Also within the Department, the Translation Section provides key teaching including a high-achieving B.A. programme and three high-recruiting Master’s programmes. Our research focuses on cultural transfer, AVT, and political, institutional and commercial aspects of translation. The Translation Section is home to the Research Centre for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies. Assistant Professor in Modern Arabic Studies, University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Modern Arabic Studies in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies to begin on 1 October 2022. The appointment is for 12 months in the first instance. Applicants will have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of a stimulating programme for bright and highly-motivated students taking Arabic, Persian, Hebrew often in conjunction with a modern European language. The successful candidate should have a PhD in some aspect of Arabic Studies. They will be expected to contribute substantially to teaching on the history and society of the modern Middle East, along with colleagues focusing on Iran, Israel and North Africa in Years 1 and 2 (Part IA and Part IB) of the curriculum. They will also be expected to deliver a Y4 (Part II) special subject on the modern history of the Arab world, and supervise undergraduate dissertations in modern Arabic Studies. They will also have a role in setting and marking exams.
