The School of Modern Languages at the University of Bristol seeks to appoint a Lecturer (Grade J, Level B) in Chinese translation and interpreting. The role is in the first instance for a fixed term of 8 months from February to September 2021. This is a 0.15 Full Time Equivalent position on Pathway 3 (primary responsibility for teaching, rather than research). What will you be doing? The successful candidate will supervise dissertations and contribute to two taught units on the MA in Chinese-English Translation, ‘Introduction to Specialised Translation’ and ‘Liaison Interpreting for Business’. The successful candidate’s contribution will focus on translation and interpreting from English into Chinese, including marking and marking moderation. The teaching and supervision will include both online and campus-based activities in a blended learning environment. This role is designed to deliver teaching at BA and MA. The Department teaches a range of languages – including Mandarin, Arabic, French, German, Italian and Spanish – at levels from the informal conversational to the post-graduate. We offer a BA English-Chinese Translation and Interpreting, which teaches students from partner universities in China (on 2+2 BA degrees and 1+1 BA / MA schemes), and have a large cohort of Mandarin students on our twin MA programmes in Translation and Interpreting and Professional Translation. The successful candidate will lead teaching on the BA English-Chinese Translation and Interpreting, including Translation Workshop modules and the supervision of translation projects, the Mandarin elements of the above-named MA programmes, including modules in both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. The Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) is an internationally recognised centre for research, scholarship and teaching in translation and interpreting, and has recently been awarded a £3.56m Expanding Excellence in England grant to launch an ambitious new research programme. This programme will bring together human-based research practices with cutting-edge advances in machine learning and AI, focusing on the convergence of human and automated approaches to different modalities of translation and interpreting in order to initiate a step-change in the broader translation research agenda. To support the expansion programme, we seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with expertise in applying natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) approaches to problems in translation or interpreting studies. The successful candidate will undertake research relevant to current and future projects in CTS, with a specific focus on designing, creating, and applying NLP-based methods within translation/interpreting research. S/he will contribute to the development of this area within CTS. The success of the research programme requires multidisciplinary collaborations. Good communication, presentation and project management skills are therefore essential as is a strong interest in combining human and automated approaches to translation/interpreting.
