Lecturer - Translation Studies

Assistant Lecturer, Translation and Interpreting Studies

Duration: 6 month fixed-term appointment, commencing in February 2019 Remuneration: $66,706 - $90,532 pa Level A (plus 9.5% employer superannuation) The Translation and Interpreting Studies Program (http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/translation-interpreting) seeks to fill a six-month teaching position to commence on February 2019, and be based at the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School in Suzhou, China (https://www.monash.edu/about/our-locations/china). Full/Associate/Assistant Professor in Translation Studies

The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Full/Associate/Assistant Professor in Translation Studies. The Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational, scholarly community. Apart from an undergraduate degree in English Studies, the Department of English offers a Minor programme in Translation Studies. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers an MA in Translation Studies, an MA in English Studies, and an MA in Second Language Acquisition (delivered with the Departments of Portuguese and Chinese). There are two PhD areas, in (i) English Literary Studies and (ii) English Linguistics, both of which include PhD research in Translation Studies. In addition, the Department of English is home to the Centre for Studies in Translation, Interpreting and Cognition (http://cstic.umac.mo) and a state-of-the-art Cognitive Laboratory. The Department also contributes courses to a General Education programme. One of the prime aims of the Department is to recruit staff who will be able to teach and research in one or more areas of translation. Qualifications The successful candidate will have a PhD in Translation Studies or in related disciplines, teaching experience at tertiary level and a track record of quality research publications appropriate to any of the ranks of the Full/Associate/Assistant Professors. Full Professor in Translation and/or Interpreting Studies

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a new field of research which explores translation in the context of recent advances in communication and translation technologies. The research area will comprise two lines of inquiry: Firstly, it will examine phenomena and practices that go beyond the narrower concerns of professional practice, challenge traditional conceptions of translation, and address innovative areas such as translation communities, crowd translation, fan translation or multimodal translation; secondly, it will critically assess the use of new technologies in (professional) translation practice and seek to predict the implications of their employment. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and deliver courses on the Institute’s bachelor’s and master’s programmes and teach on the Faculty’s doctoral programme. S/he will supervise bachelor’s and master’s as well as PhD theses and assume administrative responsibilities within the Institute and the Faculty. Requirements for employment Completion of an appropriate university degree at a university in Austria or abroad Habilitation or equivalent qualification in Translation and/or Interpreting Studies Excellent scientific qualification in research and teaching for the relevant subject (relative to academic age) Acquired international research and teaching experience after completion of the Doctorate/PhD Competence in subject-specific project acquisition Management and leadership experience Gender mainstreaming competence   The candidate is expected to demonstrate his/her educational and didactic skills. Call for Research Fellowship

The research fellowship programme at the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations based in London (AKU-ISMC) commences in January 2019 and offers an opportunity to pursue research within a stimulating and supportive environment. Fellows play an active role in the intellectual life of the Institute, participating in a wide range of seminars, workshops, and conferences. The duration of the fellowship will be six months. During this period, candidates explore and shed new light on one of the Institute’s major research themes.   Fellowship for 2018/19 For 2018/19, the fellowship will focus on AKU-ISMC’s programme on Governance for the Public Good in Muslim Contexts. As such, the fellow is expected to actively participate in the planning and execution of the programme’s activities. Within the progamme’s focus, a Research Fellow is sought who will carry out research related to one the following topics.   Potential areas of research Translation and governance: translation(s) of governance and governance of translation Political accountability of the executive in semi-presidential regimes Fiqh and popular culture   Expected Outcomes The Fellow will be expected to: (1) produce a deliverable (e.g., a research paper) on their fellowship topic acknowledging the fellowship scheme at AKU-ISMC; (2) organise a research workshop which will be an opportunity to bring together other academics working on their topic; (3) engage in discussions about their work and that of colleagues at AKU-ISMC; and (4) possibly delivering lectures and seminars in the MA programme in Muslim Cultures.   Requirements: Candidates should have: A PhD in the Humanities or Social SciencesDemonstrated research background in the above topicExcellent communication skills demonstrating a high level of proficiency in English, written and verbal, including language(s) relevant to their proposed research   Funding: The incumbents will receive a gross annual salary in the range of £31,000 to £35,000 and an annual research budget of £500. A return flight will be paid for international Fellows. Please note that accommodation in London will need to be independently organised by the Fellow.
