Guidelines for Participants
IATIS 2021 will be held both on site in Barcelona and remotely using Zoom.
Pre-Conference Workshops, Thematic Panels and General Theme sessions will take place in breakout rooms specially organised according to the programme.
On 7 September, all registered participants will receive a Zoom link to access the conference. If by the 7th of September, you haven’t received it, check your spam folder or send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Here is a manual to use the Zoom application. Please remember to update to the latest version to have all the functionalities available.
The organisation has set up two additional rooms in the conference venue for those participants who need to follow the sessions online, with free access to Wi-fi connection.

Call for Proposals to host the 2024 IATIS Conference
The International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) has held 6 conferences so far: Seoul in 2004, Cape Town in 2006, Melbourne in 2009, Belfast in 2012, Belo Horizonte in 2015, Hong Kong in 2018. The organisation of the 7th IATIS Conference, to be held in Barcelona in July 2021, is now well underway, and already we’re turning our attention to the 8th IATIS Conference, which is to be held in 2024.
IATIS would thus like to invite interested to prepare proposals to host the 2024 Conference following these guidelines.

The IATIS Executive hopes to announce the venue for the 2021 IATIS Conference in Barcelona in September 2021.

For the 7th IATIS Conference, IATIS and the Organizing Committee are joining their efforts to offer One Full Bursary and a Registration Solidarity Fund.
The scheme is only for delegates whose paper abstract (in or out of a panel) has been accepted by the Scientific Committee (see below for further elegibility conditions).

IATIS Bursary
As for every conference, the IATIS bursary covers visa, flight, accommodation, IATIS membership, registration fees, meals during the conference.
Elegibility:
Scientific excellence
Delegates from bands 3 and 4 countries
Since the bursary is for on-site participation, the awardee needs to be allowed entry into Spain despite the current pandemic. For general entry restrictions and authorizations, please consult the Spanish Ministry of Health portal, updated every two weeks.
Given the frequent updates, delegates from bands 3 and 4 countries are encouraged to apply even if at the moment of application, they are not allowed entry, as this may change by the time the committee takes its decision.
In the event of a change of entry permission preventing the bursary awardee from attending the conference, the awardee will attend online and the unused funds will be allocated to another bursary or to the solidarity fund.
Registration Solidarity Fund
The Organizing Committee has raised a Solidarity Fund to cover the registration fees (online or onsite).
Elegibility:
Scientific excellence
Delegates from bands 3 and 4 countries
Delegates from any country whose income has been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic

The Charge of the Bull: A Labyrinth in Barcelona

Yet such a translation is always many-layered. Climate change poses risks to the city, with rising temperatures, water shortages and coastal flooding an increasingly likely feature of Barcelona’s future. With such an anthropogenic disaster looming, does the anthropomorphism of The Thinking Bull reflect the anthropocentrism that has led us to dominate and manipulate the natural world at great cost? Just behind the sculpture is a statue of Joan Güell i Ferrer, the wealthy slave-trader whose money helped kick-start the development of the Eixample district. That was once a future to contrast with the city’s walled past. Now the future seems equally uncertain, and the pathways to reach it just as ethically fraught.
The Charge of the Bull: a Labyrinth in Barcelona is an interactive, virtual storytelling experience through the streets of Barcelona. Labyrinth is a project that explores the meaning of city spaces by uncovering complex stories told through the physical features of a place. Walking between a series of locations, translations of spaces - such as the above at el toro pensador - are woven into an uncertain, emerging narrative that invites participants into a series of questions, designed to embroil them in the ecology of the city.
