Extension of Paper Proposal Deadline for First IATIS Regional Workshop on Translation and Cultural Identity, Semarang, Indonesia 25 - 27 March 2013   We have extended the submission of abstracts to July 15, 2012. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by September 28, 2012.   First IATIS Regional Workshop on Translation and Cultural Identity Semarang, Indonesia 25 - 27 March 2013     Translation is a complex and on-going process that requires both linguistic and cultural adaptation. Translation can challenge, shape or maintain the identity of both source and target cultures, where the translator becomes a negotiator between the two poles. The translator negotiates different challenges in order to produce translations that will be acceptable to target cultures. However, this negotiation is all the more difficult within a multilingual and multicultural context. This workshop will focus on various aspects of how translation relates to the target readers' culture, examining various aspects from the political and sociocultural to the textual and technological. The workshop will comprise parallel paper presentation sessions, plenary sessions as well as a panel discussion by keynote speakers.     We invite workshop papers exploring any of the following sub-themes or other related aspects:      Translation and the issue of multiculturalism and multilingualism Maintaining, shaping, and challenging national/local cultural identity in translation Government policies and their effects on translation products Issues of acceptability of translations between culturally distant language Translation of pop culture and its enculturation effects Translation in cyber-world and its challenges to cultural identity   Keynote Speakers:   Dr Sebnem Susam-Sarajeva (University of Edinburgh, UK) Dr. Carol O'Sullivan (University of Portsmouth, UK) Dr. Rochayah Machali (University of New South Wales, Australia)     Papers will be presented in parallel sessions on each of these sub-themes. Papers accepted for the parallel sessions will be allocated 30 minutes in the program, which includes 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions/discussion.   Deadline for Abstracts   The deadline for the submission of abstracts is June 15, 2012. IATIS Regional Workshops From 2012, IATIS will be introducing a new initiative to further encourage international academic cooperation among members of the discipline: IATIS Regional Workshops. These three-day workshops are envisaged as events planned and organised under the aegis of IATIS, but funded by the relevant local institutions and sponsors.   The first of these events will take place in Java, Indonesia, 25-27 March 2013.  For more information on Regional Workshops in general, please click here.

The initiative, launched by the Middle East and North Africa Panel of the British Academy, then under the chairmanship of Professor Clive Holes of the University of Oxford, recognises that early-career scholars in the region tend to face problems in terms of knowledge of latest developments in the field and ability to follow the literature, and in terms of access to resources. Capacity building at this level aims to create an environment where Arab, Turkish and Iranian colleagues might be able to strengthen their research profile and publish in international outlets.  The Workshop  was attended by delegates from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine (both Gaza and the West Bank), Turkey and Yemen. Workshop presentations were delivered by IATIS co-Vice Presidents Professor Mona Baker of the University of Manchester and  Dr Şebnem Susam-Sarajeva of the University of Edinburgh, as well as IATIS Member Professor Myriam Salama-Carr of the University of Salford. One of the highlights of the Workshop was a surprise visit by HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal, who gave a brief presentation in which he shared some of his thoughts on translation and intercultural dialogue with delegates, attended a number of presentations by workshop leaders and participated in the debate. 

The International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) and the Asociación Ibérica de Estudios de Traducción e Interpretación (AIETI) share common goals in developing research on translation and interpreting studies. These goals include: (a) to promote research on translation, interpreting and intercultural communication; (b) to provide a framework for the scholarly discussion of issues related to the education and professional development of translators and interpreters; (c) to encourage public awareness of research in Translation and Interpreting Studies. To foster closer cooperation between the two associations in these terms, IATIS and AIETI wish, through this protocol of understanding, to formalize institutional links between their associations.

August 2010: IATIS announces election to Executive Council. Nominations are now being sought for election candidates for the IATIS Executive Council. December 2009: IATIS is pleased to announce the publication of the fifth issue of New Voices in Translation Studies.

May 2011: IATIS is delighted to call for papers for its fourth conference, which will take place at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, from July 24th to 27th, 2012. The conference theme, translation and the politics of recognition, embraces a wide range of topics within translation, interpreting and intercultural studies. Intending participants can submit abstracts to the general conference or to any one of the conference panels.

IATIS is delighted to announce the publication of Translation: Theory and Practice in Dialogue, the fourth volume in the IATIS-Continuum Series on Translation Studies (IATIS Yearbook 2009). This collection edited by Antoinette Fawcett, Karla L. Guadarrama García and Rebecca Hyde Parker includes contributions by Jean BOASE-BEIER, Elizabeth THORNTON, Lina FISHER, Christine CALFOGLOU, Clive SCOTT, Agnieszka PANTUCHOWICZ, Paulina Gąsior, Szu-Wen CINDY KUNG, Hiroko FURUKAWA, Kirsten MALMKJÆR.
