Under the umbrella of translation and journal publication, abstracts of papers may be submitted to the organizing committee on the following suggested – though not exclusive – themes: 1. Language politics and cultural translation The journals referred to may take the traditional printed format, or exist as virtual publications. The notion of ‘translation’ is understood in a broad sense, including conventional translated texts (the source text can be identified), or adaptations, re-writings, journalistic productions which could be regarded as hybrid translations. Interested scholars are invited to submit a 250 to 300-word abstract by 10th March 2014. Contact information and academic affiliation should be included as well. The conference is hosted by the School of Foreign Studies, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. The Summer School is presented for doctoral/master's students and/or lecturers in translation studies and intercultural communication from all over Africa with the aim of working towards an African research agenda for translation studies. The Summer School features lectures and tutorials under the guidance of prominent scholars in Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication. SSTSA 2014 will be followed by a regional conference hosted by IATIS at the same venue on 23 and 24 August 2014. For participants to SSTSA 2014, entry to the conference is free, provided they read a paper. Translation practices, strategies, norms and ethics in the field of news, and more applied analyses of narratives in specific contexts (e.g. the press, television, advertising, cinema, and the internet) will also be examined. As media/news translation is a broadly uncharted territory, at least, in the GCC region, the forum will consider the importance of translation in the circulation of news and narratives in this strategically vital region.ETS invites participants to discuss the interrelationship between media in the widest sense and translation by addressing the following questions: • What is the role played by translation in local and international news reporting?• What happens when translators transfer information across linguistic, cultural and ideological boundaries?• What impact do shifts in translations from English to Arabic and vice versa have on receivers and their perception of information?• How do explicit/implicit translation choices result in different interpretations of one event by diverse readers? The fifth Symposium for young researchers is aimed at students who recently began their research, master students, doctoral students, and students who have recently completed their PhD theses. The final conference of the project will focus on training, assessment, certification and accreditation of legal translators in criminal procedures in the EU. The project aims at providing an EU-wide platform for the exchange of best practices and experiences in the following areas, related to the specific working conditions of legal translation in criminal proceedings: Generic analysis of the essential document types as listed in Directive 2010/64/EU (Article 3) with a view to defining indicators, templates, and terminology to achieve quality in legal translation of these documents; Generic analysis of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) with a view to defining indicators and terminology to achieve quality in legal translation of these documents; Development of curricula and training materials for legal translators; Development of one or more core curricula for language training of legal practitioners; Development of testing, evaluation and assessment procedures and materials for legal translators; Development of EU-wide recommendations and best practices for testing, evaluation & assessment procedures and materials. Therefore, we would like to receive abstracts for presentation at the conference. Accepted presenters will be eligible for funds allocated by the project as follows: the amount as is budgetted for travel within the EU will be allocated to both presenters from the EU and from beyond the EU. This entails that presenters from beyond the EU will have to sollicit funding for the difference between the EU amount and the overseas costs. The Translation Center in partnership with The Massachusetts Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies, co-sponsored by the English Department and the Comparative Literature Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, invites scholars to its first annual conference, ³International Shakespeare: Translation, Adaptation, and Performance,² on March 7-9, 2014. Paper proposals are welcome on a number of topics: case studies of translation, production, imitation or reception of Shakespeare worldwide, as well as on the impact of these phenomena on the interpretation of Shakespeare¹s texts. The conference can integrate theories of identity, political perspectives, translation, readership, reception and censorship. Jean-Michel Déprats (Université Paris X Nanterre) specializes in William Shakespeare and has collaborated with Gisèle Venet to produce French translations of all thirty-eight plays. For the theater, he has translated many plays, including Coriolanus, and Richard III. In 1981, he staged The Tempest. His film work includes the French dubbed translation for Kenneth Branagh¹s Henry V. Peter S. Donaldson (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is Director of the Global Shakespeares Digital Archive at MIT and author of Shakespearean Film/Shakespearean Directors (1990). His Shakespeare electronic projects include the Shakespeare Electronic Archive, Hamlet on the Ramparts, and XMAS: Cross-Media Annotation System. He is a pioneer in the use of media, including ³Ghostly Texts and Virtual Performances: Old Hamlet in New Media² (1993) and ³Digital Archives and Sibylline Fragments² (1998) on Prospero¹s Books. Edwin Gentzler (UMass Amherst) is the author of Translation and Identity in the Americas (2008), Contemporary Translation Theories (2001), and co-editor (with Maria Tymoczko) of Translation and Power (2002).
