CROSSLING Symposium: Language Contacts at the Crossroads of Disciplines

University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu, February 28–March 1, 2013
 
The goal of this symposium is to bring together scholars working on language contact, cross-linguistic influence or contact-induced change and variation within different disciplines. The symposium aims to promote cross-disciplinary and cross-methodological discussion in the study of language contact and strives for genuine discussion and cross-pollination between various disciplines and research traditions, their theories, methods, and data, and between researchers of different languages. We welcome contributions focusing on language contact, SLA, translation studies and other possible areas of research and welcome scholars who wish to acquire novel cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary and cross-methodological impulses for their own research. We would like to encourage scholars working on different languages and language pairs to give presentations. The focus may lie on linguistic data as well as on theoretical issues.

In today’s globalised society, translation and interpreting are gaining visibility and relevance as a means to foster communication and dialogue in increasingly multicultural and multilingual environments. Practised since time immemorial, both activities have become more complex and multifaceted in recent decades, intersecting with many other disciplines. New Trends in Translation Studies is an international series with the main objectives of promoting the scholarly study of translation and interpreting and of
functioning as a forum for the translation and interpreting research community.
 
This series publishes research on subjects related to multimedia translation and interpreting, in their various social roles. It is primarily intended to engage with contemporary issues surrounding the new multidimensional environments in which translation is flourishing, such as audiovisual media, the internet, and emerging new media and technologies. It sets out to reflect new trends in research and in the profession, to encourage flexible methodologies, and to promote interdisciplinary research ranging from the theoretical to the practical, and from the applied to the pedagogical.

Call for Papers:

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Department of French Translation and Interpreting is organizing an international translation studies conference in order to provide a framework for discussing new destinations in translation studies.  

Translation, an impetus for human evolution, is one of the most important subject matters in academic research in line with innovations of our era. Going beyond imposing limits, translation studies is enriched by new perspectives and travels to new destinations. Considering translation as a multifaceted concept which involves numerous parameters, this conference proposes the opportunity to explore theoretical and practical issues in translation with innovative points of view, to analyze the nature of present-day problematics and develop possible solutions.


Papers will be 20 minutes with a further 10 minutes of discussion and are to be presented in French, English and Turkish. We are pleased to announce the biennual 14th International Conference of Translation (Persidangan Penterjemahan Antarabangsa Ke-14, PPA-14) and the FIT 7th Asian Translators’ Forum (ATF-7) to be held from 27 to 29 August 2013.  Both conference and forum is jointly organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysian National Institute of Books & Translation (ITBM), Malaysian Translators Association (MTA) and Institute of Language and Literature (DBP), under the patronage of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.  The theme of the conference is:
“TRANSLATOR AND INTERPRETER TRAINING: INNOVATION, ASSESSMENT AND RECOGNITION”
The conference aims at bringing together academics, researchers, professionals and practitioners from Asia and worldwide for a productive and rewarding exchange of insights, experiences, views and perspectives on current and future developments in translation and interpreting training. While the PPA has been organized bienually, the 7th ATF will be the first time ever organized by these bodies in Malaysia.  The ATF is held every three years under the auspices of the International Translators’ Federation/Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs (FIT).

Exploiting Emerging Technologies to Prepare Interpreters and their Clients for Professional Practice

This seminar, organised by the EU project IVY – ‘Interpreting in Virtual Reality’ (co-ordinated by the Centre for Translation Studies, University of Surrey, 2011-12), seeks to discover the capabilities of emerging technologies and the role they can play in preparing interpreters and their clients for professional practice. It will disseminate the findings of the IVY project, which has used the innovative features of an avatar-based 3D virtual environment, Second Life, to simulate professional practice in business and public service interpreting, along with the findings from other initiatives relating to the use of ICT in the training of interpreters and their clients.
Who should attend:
The symposium will provide a forum for discussion and will bring together:
  • Researchers and developers with an interest in applying ICT to education and training in the field of interpreting
  • Scholars interested in interpreting pedagogy
  • Representatives of educational and training institutions
  • Interpreter trainers and those who train interpreter clients

We are currently looking to recruit one or more lecturers for the English > Chinese component of this exciting Masters programme, to start in October 2012. MScTrans aims to provide training which prepares students for work as translation professionals. The programme provides practical translation classes in a wide range of language combinations, and the teaching is split into blocks:

Block One: Scientific Translation (October - November)

Block Two: Medical Translation (November - January)

Block Three: Technical Translation (January - March)
