The IATIS Continuum Translation Studies Series
The IATIS Yearbook is a full-length, refereed volume containing a thematically coherent collection of essays and overseen by an expert editor. The focus of each individual volume is intended to be of interest to a large part of the academic community and to accommodate a wide range of perspectives and approaches.
In 2006 IATIS negotiated an agreement with the prestigious academic publisher Continuum to publish these volumes within the new Continuum Translation Studies Series. These volumes, though not specifically entitled 'Yearbooks', bear the IATIS logo and statement of the General Editor and the selection of theme and editor is carried out by the IATIS Publications Committee.
Prospective guest editors who wish to propose a theme for future yearbooks are invited to contact the Chair of the Publications Committee.
IATIS Yearbook 2012
This volume presents fresh approaches to the role that translation – in its many forms – plays in enabling and mediating global cultural exchange. As modes of communication and textual production continue to evolve, the field of translation studies has an increasingly important role in exploring the ways in which words, images and performances are translated and reinterpreted in new socio-cultural contexts. The book includes an innovative mix of literary, cultural and intersemiotic perspectives and represents a wide range of languages and cultures. The contributions are all linked by a shared focus on the place of translation in the contemporary world, and the ways in which translation, and the discipline of translation studies, can shed light on questions of inter- and hypertextuality, multimodality and globalization in contemporary cultural production.
IATIS Yearbook 2010
Cognitive Explorations of Translation focuses on the topic of investigating translation processes from a cognitive perspective. With little published on this topic to date, Sharon O'Brien brings together a global collection of contributors covering a range of topics.
Central themes include modelling translation competence, construction and reformulation of text meaning, translators' behaviour during translation and what methodologies can best be utilized to investigate these topics. Techniques covered include eye-tracking, Think-Aloud protocols, keyboard logging and EEG (Electroencephalogram).
This book will be of interest to researchers and postgraduates in translation studies and cognitive linguistics as well as practicing translators.

IATIS Yearbook 2009
Theories constantly change and grow. One consequence of this is that people write books and articles about their own and other people's theories, and translators almost always tell you their theory (perhaps without realizing) in the introductions to their translations. A further consequence is that many of us (students as well as teachers) see the teaching of theory as crucial to the practice of translation and therefore to its teaching. It is only by understanding the complex interplay of theory and practice that we really benefit from studying either. It is only by changing our way of seeing translation that we can change ways of doing it and it is only by engaging with new perspectives that we can enhance the way we see. The clear message of this much-needed book is thus two-fold: theory opens out practice, allowing for innovation and experiment, and theory gives us a richer mental world with which to understand and discuss what we do.
IATIS Yearbook 2008
Africa is a huge continent with multicultural nations, where translation and interpretation are everyday occurrences. Translation studies has flourished in Africa in the last decade, with countries often having several official languages.
The primary objective of this volume is to bring together research articles on translation and interpreting studies in Africa, written mainly, but not exclusively, by researchers living and working in the region. The focus is on the translation of literature and the media, and on the uses of interpreting. It provides a clear idea of the state and direction of research, and highlights research that is not commonly disseminated in North Africa and Europe. This book examines the role of translation as a politically and socially active phenomenon which moulds and potentially alters the outcome of many types of communicative event.
