LECTURER IN TRANSLATION STUDIES

Job Summary

The University of Birmingham wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Translation Studies with effect from 1st January 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.   We seek someone who will make an outstanding contribution to the research profile of the English Department, and will be able to teach across a range of modules including, preferably, Translation Technology and Translation in Professional Contexts.

The main responsibility of the post holder will be to contribute to the teaching and research activity of the Division of English Language and Applied Linguistics, especially in delivering modules on postgraduate degree programmes (both on campus and by distance learning), and also contributing to the development of research postgraduate activity. Some administrative duties will be involved.  The appointed person will also be expected to undertake research of an international standard.

Main Duties

  • To deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities within the specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism to undergraduates and post graduates, predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars, but also through methods appropriate to distance learning, so that the School’s teaching objectives are met.
  • To plan, design and develop course objectives and material
  • To set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide feedback to students
  • To design own teaching work including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the objectives of the teaching programme
  • To contribute to the accreditation of courses and quality control processes
  • To identify the need for developing the content or structure of modules with colleagues and make recommendations on how this should be achieved
  • To provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that issues are dealt with in a timely and effective manner
  • To contribute to new teaching approaches and to curriculum development
  • To plan and develop research contributions to subject area using methodologies, critical evaluations, interpretations, analyses and other appropriate techniques
  • To secure research funding for innovative projects
  • To suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques, models and methods in collaboration with colleagues
  • To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective media such as publication, research seminars etc           
  • To supervise and examine PhD students

Person Specification

Essential

  1. Excellent publications record demonstrated by existing and forthcoming publications
  2. Demonstrated experience of teaching in Higher Education
  3. Excellent IT skills in Microsoft Office
  4. Demonstrated skills in managing, motivating and counselling colleagues and students

Desirable

  1. Demonstrated ability to attract research funding
  2. Experience of postgraduate supervision
  3. Teaching or research-related administrative experience in a university context

The Department of English: Division of English Language and Applied Linguistics

The Department of English is one of the largest centres of teaching and research on English language and literature in the country, with a distinguished history that reaches back 100 years.  Its staff includes internationally-respected authorities in many branches of English language studies, broadly conceived (from narratology to corpus linguistics), Applied Linguistics, and in all the major periods and writers of the literature (from Chaucer to J.G.Ballard).  We run several taught Masters programmes in TEFL, Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (both on campus and at distance), and approximately 40 students are completing doctorates under our supervision at any point in time. The undergraduate body comprises approximately 100 single honours and 100 joint honours students in each of the three years.  Our single honours programmes include a Single Honours and Joint Honours programme in English Language as well as programmes focusing on English Literature.    There is a lively research culture here, in many aspects of discourse studies, language learning and teaching, and corpus linguistics.

 

The School of English, Drama and American & Canadian Studies

The School specialises in English and American literature, performance and culture alongside English Language studies and work in US and Canadian politics and history. It has one of the largest undergraduate cohorts in the university and a thriving community of postgraduate students. About 70 academic staff are employed by the School. The School is part of the College of Arts and Law.
