Faculty Position - Academic Advisor for Master in Translation Studies

The Translation and Interpreting Institute of Hamad bin Khalifa University in Doha, Qatar, is currently searching for an Academic Advisor for it MA program in Translation Studies.

Job Description/Summary:

This is a faculty position that is held by an Assistant Professor of Translation Studies. The Academic Advisor of the MATS program is responsible for advising new and returning graduate students regarding course curriculum requirements, academic planning, advising while following TII graduate studies policy and procedure. He or she will serve as the primary graduate program advisor, maintaining a thorough understanding of requirements for degree completion within the MA in Translation Studies. He or she will assist graduate students with course registration core and elective courses and coordinate student assistantships. He or she will maintain database of student advising records. As an academic advisor, he or she will handle highly sensitive and confidential documents. He or she will act as a liaison between the Director of Post Graduate Studies & Research, Program Coordinator, Admissions Officer, faculty, and students.
As an Assistant Professor, he or she will be responsible for delivering some components of the academic program and ensuring that both MA and PhD students receive appropriate training in their chosen specialization.
Responsibilities:
  • Support the MATS program in advising graduate students by providing information specific to the MA, in line with the Institute’s guidelines and the overall objectives of the Institute and Qatar Foundation.
  • Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding core courses, electives or other requirements, academic policies and procedures, and TII resources.
  • Assist students, where appropriate, in other issues that affect their course of study,
  • Participate in the selection and testing of potential students, ensuring that they meet the requirements for admission.
  • Provide reports on advising, and students’ progress in their degree to the Director of Post Graduate Studies & Research for review and decision-making.
  • Help students to identify their long-term goals and career plans.
  • Attend and represent the Institute in local, regional and international conferences as well as with similar institutions and develop and maintain strong relationships for future collaboration with the Institute.
  • Keep abreast of and adopt current teaching methodologies and the latest translation technologies to ensure students are taught in the best possible manner.
  • Perform related duties as required or deemed necessary to meet the Academic Advising goals within the Advisor’s scope of responsibility.
  • Encourage and empower students to make their own decisions.

 

Assistant Professor Responsibilities:
  • Teach a range of core and optional modules on various areas of translation studies.
  • Set and mark assessment tasks.
  • Maintain a considerable contact with students through individual interviews, group meetings and workshops.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures and student support services.
  • Supervise and mark MA student dissertations and projects.
  • Keep abreast of and adopt current teaching methodologies, and the latest translation technologies to ensure students are taught in the best possible manner.
  • Participate in activities designed to promote the MA program and the Institute.
  • Conduct research on translation and/or interpreting and publish regularly in high quality regional and international outlets.
 
Knowledge, Expertise & Skills:
  • A completed PhD in Translation Studies.
  • Three to five years of experience in the education sector as an Assistant Professor.
  • Experience of audiovisual translation studies
  • Knowledge of the latest audiovisual translation technologies, methods and techniques.
  • Excellent teaching skills, communication and interpersonal skills and organizational and planning skills.
  • Familiarity with generic and specialist IT applications.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic; fluency in additional languages is preferred (French, Spanish, etc.).
  • A commitment to collegiality.
