“Theatrical Translation”: a themed issue of Przekładaniec

Call for Papers

“Theatrical Translation”: a themed issue of Przekładaniec. A Journal of Literary Translation (Jagiellonian University, Poland), 2015

The ambivalent status of drama as the text-type situated on the border between literature and theatre has long intrigued literary theorists. Should a drama  be treated as a literary text independent of its stage production (literary theory of drama) or as a kind of script which can be fully realized only in the theatre (theatrical theory of drama)? Can this dilemma be solved by perceiving a dramatic text and a perfomance based on it as two separate art forms (theory of drama as translation)? Equally fluid and imprecise are typologies of dramatic texts – for instance, the division into stage dramas and closet dramas, as Romantic closet dramas are staged nowadays – and genre classifications, especially in contemporary theatre.

This unstable identity of the dramatic text is mirrored in numerous challenges the translator of dramatic texts faces. These challenges are the focus of the themed issue of Przekładaniec devoted to theatrical translation.

We invite contributions on the following subjects:

  • Theatrical translation as a problematic object of study
  •  Relationships between the author, the translator and the director
  • Translation versus adaptation
  • Theatrical translation and translation for the stage
  • Translation of dialogue as a performative act
  • Text transformations in theatrical translation
  • Translation and theatrical tradition
  • Translation series in the theatre

Przekładaniec is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. The special issue will appear in Polish and English language versions. For more information on the journal visit http://www.wuj.pl/page,art,artid,88.html

Zaproszenie do publikacji

„Przekład teatralny”: numer specjalny Przekładańca, pisma Katedry UNESCO do Badań nad Przekładem i Komunikacją Międzykulturową Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego (2015)

  • Przekład a adaptacja
  • Przekład teatralny a przekład sceniczny
