1st Conference of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies

Translation and the Construction of Identity

The First IATIS Conference was held at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, Korea on 12-14 August 2004 to celebrate the launch of the Association. Entitled "Translation and the Construction of Identity" this conference featured contributions from across the globe.

 

Deadline for submitting abstracts: 30th November 2003
Notification of acceptance: 15th January 2004

 


The conference themes include the following:

  • The construction and maintenance of national, religious and ethnic identity
  • Power, diplomacy and culture in international relations
  • The intellectual effects of globalisation
  • Negotiating identities across cultures: migration, gender, asylum
  • Self and Other in crosscultural encounters
  • The impact of institutional identities on translation and crosscultural research

These themes may be approached from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, including various strands of linguistics, pragmatics, literary theory, gender studies, postcolonial studies, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and media studies, among others. A number of special panels have been established to deal with specific areas of interest.
