Series
The
IATIS Yearbook is a full-length,
refereed volume containing a thematically coherent collection of essays
and overseen by an expert editor. The focus of each individual volume is
intended to be of interest to a large part of the academic community and
to accommodate a wide range of perspectives and approaches.
In 2006 IATIS negotiated an agreement with
the prestigious academic publisher
Continuumto publish these volumes within
the new Continuum Translation Studies Series. These volumes, though not
specifically entitled 'Yearbooks', bear the IATIS logo and statement of
the General Editor and the selection of theme and editor is carried out
by the IATIS Publications
Committee.
Africa is a huge
continent with multicultural nations, where translation and
interpretation are everyday occurrences. Translation studies has
flourished in Africa in the last decade, with countries often having
several official languages.
The primary objective of this volume is to
bring together research articles on translation and interpreting studies
in Africa, written mainly, but not exclusively, by researchers living
and working in the region. The focus is on the translation of literature
and the media, and on the uses of interpreting. It provides a clear idea
of the state and direction of research, and highlights research that is
not commonly disseminated in North Africa and Europe. This book is an
essential text for students and researchers working in translation
studies, African studies and in African linguistics.
Translator and Interpreter Training: Issues,
Methods and Debates
As a research area,
education in the fields of translation and interpreting has received
growing attention in recent years, with the increasing
professionalization of the language-mediation sector demanding ever more
highly trained employees with broader repertoires. This trend is
evidenced in the present collection, which addresses issues in pedagogy
in a variety of translation and interpreting domains. A global range of
contributors discuss teaching, evaluation, professionalization and
competence as they apply to an array of educational and linguistic
situations. Translator and Interpreter Training: Issues, Methods and
Debates presents an in-depth consideration of the issues involved in
this area of translation and interpreting studies, and will be of
interest to all students and academics working and researching in the
field.
This book examines the role of translation as a politically and
socially active phenomenon which moulds and potentially alters the
outcome of many types of communicative event. The contributors examine
the effect of translation and intervention in a range of situations and
case studies including the European Union, marginalized literature in
India, Arabic historical texts and interpretation in the South African
courtroom. The result is a comprehensive examination of this key
question in translation studies: to what extent and in which ways does
the translator, and those involved in the translation process, intervene
in the discourse he or she translates?Translation as Intervention is a fascinating collection of essays
discussing this most central of topics in translation studies. It will
be of interest to postgraduates and academics researching in this area.
In recent years, the topic of ‘identity’
has turned into a highly productive field of study in the humanities. The
contributions to this First IATIS Yearbook, based on papers presented in
August 2004 at the
IATIS Inaugural Conference held in Seoul, Korea,
encompass a wide range of perspectives and approaches. They deal with
different dimensions of identity, and are based on a variety of
methodologies, diverse theoretical backgrounds and geographically distant
case-study settings. The aspects discussed range from considerations of
professional identity, in relation to translators, intercultural mediators
and/or scholars in the field, to the problems, conflicts, gaps and
misunderstandings conditioning the translation of identities; from the
role translation plays in shaping various types of identity to the role
played by certain identities in determining the outcome of translation;
from the factors and agents which influence the acceptance of identities
projected in or through translation to the social structures, institutions
and networks of authority shaping a group’s expectations, which may be
reinforced or subverted through translation; from the way translation
reflects and expresses identities to the manner in which identities are
performed, made or unmade through translation; from the potential of
translation to disseminate and give access to other identities to its
potential for distorting and misrepresenting the identity of the Other.
