SPECIAL PANEL 15

CALL FOR PAPERS

Transforming Higher Education: The Role of Translation and Interpreting

Chair:

Mbulungeni Madiba,
University of Cape Town, South Africa

Presentation and Themes

The aim of this panel is to discuss the role of translation and interpreting in higher education, particularly in South Africa. As South Africa enters a second decade of democracy, universities are increasingly facing the challenge of developing and implementing language policies that meet the demands of the changed social, political, cultural and informational requirements and circumstances. Thus, the issue of language is increasingly becoming the subject of much discussion and strategic planning in most universities, and translation and interpreting are considered to be pivotal in overcoming language barriers. Accordingly, there are universities that have started to experiment with classroom interpreting and translation of teaching materials to support teaching and learning processes.

This panel invites papers that focus any aspect of the use of interpreting and translation in higher education, including, but not limited to:

  • Theoretical aspects of interpreting and translation in higher education

  • Models of implementing classroom interpreting

  • Case studies on classroom interpreting

  • The role of technology and tools

  • Cost and benefit factors

Papers that discuss similar needs and experiences in other multilingual environments are also particularly welcome.
