2nd IATIS Conference

SPECIAL PANEL 5

CALL FOR PAPERS

Investigating translation competence from an empirical-experimental perspective

Chair: Fabio Alves,
Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Presentation and Themes

This panel aims to discuss translation competence from an empirical-experimental perspective. It builds on work carried out within the framework of a joint collaboration between the PACTE (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain) and CORDIALL (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil) research groups. This collaborative work is sponsored by the Spanish and Brazilian Ministries of Education and focuses on the empirical-experimental investigation of the product/process interface in translation, and on the incorporation of new technologies in research procedures. PACTE and CORDIALL share common research interests as far as their objectives and methodologies are concerned, and their research draws extensively on the triangulation of product/process data.

 The panel invites contributions which:

  • discuss the results of experiments designed to probe translation competence and which are empirically and experimentally driven;

  • explore the product/process interface in translation;

  • discuss different models of translation competence;

  • propose new approaches that may be insightful for the development of translation competence and, therefore, be relevant for translator training.
