Translation and Transnational
Processes
On April 14-15, 2005 Azerbaijan University of Languages will
host an international conference on “Translation and
Transnational Processes”. This will be the second
international event in university history dedicated to
problems of translation. The conference is a joint initiative
of Azerbaijan University of Languages and UNESCO. The focus
will be on both theoretical and practical issues, such as
terminology development, translation in the context of
language policy, translation and literary links, the role of
translation in intercultural communication, contemporary
challenges faced by translators and interpreters,
infrastructure development for training and employing
translators, and others.
The aim of the conference is to provide an international forum
for scholars and translation specialists to discuss these
issues together, to share experiences, and to gain greater
exposure to cutting-edge developments in the practice of
translation and interpretation around the globe.
The format of the conference will be as follows (note that the
program structure is under development):

1. Contemporary Problems of Translation.
Headed by Professor Gilinjkhan Bairamov and Associate
Professor Fiala Abdullayeva of Azerbaijan University of
Languages.
a. A new view of the theory of translation

c. Language policy and translation
d. Machine translation
e. Specialization and employment of translators
f. different issues and training for written translation
versus live “simultaneous”
translation
g. the state of translation in Azerbaijan today: strengths,
weaknesses, and strategies for the future
2. Translation and Word Creation.
Headed by Professor Natiq Yusifov, Professor Charkaz
Gurbanli, and Associate Professor Azad Mammadov of Azerbaijan
University of Languages.
a. Terminology creation: criteria and obstacles
b. Translation and everyday vocabulary
c. International vocabulary and phraseology
d. Parameology
e. The use of calque in word creation
f. The role of obsolete words in word creation
g. Challenges of developing high quality specialized
dictionaries
3. Translation and Intercultural Communication.
Headed by Professor Vilayat Hajiyev, University of
Languages, and Professor Uli Rothfuss, Calw University,
Germany.

4. Translation and Literary Links.
Headed by Profesor Zeydulla Aghayev, Azerbaijan University
of Languages, and Professor Anna Shenarslan, University of
Wisconsin, U.S.A.
a. Theoretical issues involved in translating literature
- “Impossible” translations (James Joyce, Xlebnikov,
etc)—should they be attempted?
- To rhyme or not to rhyme—special problems of the translation
of poetry
- It ain’t so easy--Special problems of the translation of
oral literature and folklore
- Accuracy versus style—what makes a successful literary
translation?
b. Translation and power (What works get translated? Who
decides?)
c. Strategies to increase quality translations of Azerbaijani
(Turkic) literature into English
d. Literary links and mutual understanding/misunderstanding
e. Literary genii introduced through translation

Abstracts (up to 500 words) of paper presentations should be
sent to [] before March 15, 2005. Abstracts selected
for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings will be published
in Azerbaijani, Russian and English. Authors are also

indicated above and send it electronically with their
submitted abstracts.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Romance Linguistics,
beginning Fall 2005. PhD preferred, ABD accepted. Specialty:
French and Spanish Linguistics, with strong component of
Translation and Translation Theory. Required: native or
near-native fluency in French, Spanish and English,
demonstrable potential and commitment to teaching at graduate
and undergraduate levels, and to scholarly research. Candidacy
enhanced by any combination of the following: extensive
experience in professional translation, strong ability in
Latin. Standard teaching load: 3 courses per semester. Send
