About the International Association for Translation and
Intercultural Studies
IATIS is committed to the provision of an
intellectual forum where scholars from different regional and disciplinary
backgrounds can debate issues relating the translation and other forms of
cross-cultural communication as they continue to develop in the 21st
century. The aims of IATIS as set out in its
constitution are to:
Establish an organizational structure
that facilitates the exchange of knowledge, expertise and resources
among scholars in various parts of the world, with particular emphasis
on enabling scholars in less developed or threatened academic
communities to access the resources and expertise available in better
endowed scholarly institutions.
Stimulate interaction between scholars
in different parts of the world, with the aim of enriching our
understanding of research needs and theoretical traditions, especially
given the focus on various forms of cross-cultural communication.
Encourage scholars from different
scholarly backgrounds to explore areas of mutual concern (for example
the issue of 'mediation' across various fields of study, including
ethnography and translation).
IATIS will organize an international
conference every three years. The first launching conference is
scheduled for 12-14 August 2004 and will be held in Seoul,
Korea.
IATIS will have a number of hosting
research centres throughout the world where publications on
translation and intercultural studies, periodicals, PhD
theses, and other relevant documents will be stored and made
available to members for reference.
