The sixth issue of New Voices in Translation Studies is now available online.
IATIS, the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies, is pleased to announce the online publication of the sixth issue of New Voices in Translation Studies. Issue 6 consists of three articles by young researchers and nine abstracts of recently submitted Ph.D. theses. The broad theme connecting our three papers is the translation of literature, and more specifically, two of our authors also share a desire to confront the traditional binary model of translation by drawing on multi-lingual texts that can be examples of the creative possibilities of translation.
New Voices in Translation Studies is a refereed electronic journal co-sponsored by IATIS and the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies (CTTS) at Dublin City University. The aim of the journal is to disseminate high quality original work by new researchers in Translation Studies to a wide audience. Please format submissions according to the guidelines on our website and send to newvoices@dcu.ie

IATIS is delighted to announce the publication of Translation Studies in Africa, the second volume in the IATIS-Continuum Series on Translation Studies. This collection edited by Judith Inggs and Libby Meintjes, includes contributions by Paul BANDIA, Leon de KOCK, Frances VOSLOO, Libby MEINTJES, Tajudeen SURAKAT, Charmaine YOUNG, Judith INGGS, Haidee KRUGER, Ileana DIMITRIU, Marlene VERHOEF & Johan BLAAUW and Anne-Marie BEUKES & Marne PIENAAR.

"Translation has always been the lifeblood of the African continent, from the earliest pre-colonial times, during the colonial scramble for Africa as well as in the modern globalised context, but there has to date been little access to African research in translation studies for researchers. This book responds admirably to the challenge, presenting various perspectives on this rapidly developing discipline, including the importance of translation in shaping African history and culture, an examination of the personal and the self-conscious in the praxis of translation, as well as topics such as the translation of children’s literature, educational interpreting at multilingual universities and the challenges of training translators in post-apartheid South Africa. This is a book which raises strong awareness of issues, as well as making us all aware that there is so much more that remains unexplored."

This new collection is, effectively, the IATIS Yearbook 2008. The volumes in the Continuum Translation Studies Series are covered by members' annual subscription fees. Call for Proposals to Host the 4th IATIS Conference 2012
IATIS invites interested members to submit proposals to host the 2012 IATIS Conference. Proposals should be emailed to Dr. Dorothy Kenny, Chair of the IATIS Conference Committee, at dorothy.kenny@dcu.ie, no later than May 15th, 2009.
The International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) has held two conferences so far: the first in Seoul in 2004 and the second in Cape Town in 2006. The organisation of the 3rd IATIS Conference, to be held in Melbourne in July 2009, is now well underway, and already we’re turning our attention to the 4th IATIS Conference, which is to be held in July or August 2012 (with a slight preference for July).
IATIS would thus like to invite interested members to prepare proposals to host the 2012 Conference following the guidelines http://www.iatis.org/content/conferences/offers-iatis2012.php.
Proposals to host the 2012 conference should be emailed to Dr. Dorothy Kenny, Chair of the IATIS Conference Committee, at [dorothy.kenny@dcu.ie], to arrive no later than May 15th, 2009.
The IATIS Executive hopes to announce the venue for the 2012 IATIS conference in Melbourne in July 2009.

The International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) has held two conferences so far: the first in Seoul in 2004 and the second in Cape Town in 2006. The organisation of the 3rd IATIS Conference, to be held in Melbourne in July 2009, is now well underway, and already we’re turning our attention to the 4th IATIS Conference, which is to be held in July or August 2012 (with a slight preference for July).
IATIS would thus like to invite interested members to prepare proposals to host the 2012 Conference following the guidelines http://www.iatis.org/content/conferences/offers-iatis2012.php.
Proposals to host the 2012 conference should be emailed to Dr. Dorothy Kenny, Chair of the IATIS Conference Committee, at [dorothy.kenny@dcu.ie], to arrive no later than May 15th, 2009.
The IATIS Executive hopes to announce the venue for the 2012 IATIS conference in Melbourne in July 2009.

This collection edited by Jeremy Munday includes contributions by Carol Maier, Brian Mossop, Rita Kothari, Liu Yameng, Jef Verschueren, Basil Hatim, Rosemary Moeketsi, Joana Drugan and Francesca Billiani.
This book examines the role of translation as a politically and socially active phenomenon which moulds and potentially alters the outcome of many types of communicative event. The contributors examine the effect of translation and intervention in a range of situations and case studies including the European Union, marginalized literature in India, Arabic historical texts and interpretation in the South African courtroom. The result is a comprehensive examination of this key question in translation studies: to what extent and in which ways does the translator, and those involved in the translation process, intervene in the discourse he or she translates? Translation as Intervention is a fascinating collection of essays discussing this most central of topics in translation studies. It will be of interest to postgraduates and academics researching in this area.

Panels are groups of papers organised around a particular theme. Proposals for panels should take the form of one or two paragraphs establishing the rationale for a panel, a succinct statement of the aims of the panel, and a list of specific issues that intending contributors might address.

The theme of the conference is: ‘Mediation and Conflict: Translation and Culture in a Global Context’. This embraces such topics as transnational media, globalisation, cultural translation and intercultural relations. Related thematic areas include, but are not limited to, the following:

:: ‘cultural translation’ between mainlands and diasporas, as well as among diasporas;

3rd IATIS Conference (2009), Monash University, Melbourne (Australia)
We are delighted to announce that the 3rd Conference of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies will be hosted by the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, from July 8th to 10th, 2009.
The Conference theme will be Mediation and Conflict: Translation and Culture in a Global Context and a first call for papers and panel proposals will be issued in 2007.
The Local Organizing Committee, chaired by Rita Wilson and Brigid Maher of the Monash Translation and Interpreting Studies Programme, has plans for an exciting academic and social programme, and the conference will be preceded on July 7th by a workshop on broadcasting in a multilingual and multiplatform digital environment, run by SBS, Australia's multicultural and multilingual public broadcaster.
Prospective participants may also be interested to know that IPrAs 11th International Pragmatics Conference will take place in Melbourne from July 12th to 17th, 2009, making ґback-to-back conference attendance feasible for many.
Updates on the conference will be posted on the IATIS website, and by email.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in wonderful Melbourne in 2009!
