Translation and the Accommodation of Diversity: Indian and non-Indian Perspectives
Type of Event: Conference
Date: 2010-11-22
Venue: Université de Bretagne-Sud, PREFICS Research Centre, Lorient, France In collaboration with th University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, India.

Event theme(s): This conference is a follow-up to the conference held at University of Hyderabad, India between 10 and 12 February 2010 and whose title was “Socio-Cultural Approaches to Translation: Indian and European Perspectives”. This time, the co-organizers, Université de Bretagne-Sud, Lorient, France and University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, India, invite papers on “Translation and the Accommodation of Diversity: Indian and non-Indian Perspectives”. Translation is indeed rooted in diversity and its nature resides in managing differences of all sorts: lexical, textual, macrotextual, intertextual, individual, social, cultural, political, etc. It seems translation cannot exist without diversity although it supposedly aims at bridging gaps. Moreover, with the internationalization of IT, the omnipresence of television and the Internet frontiers between cultures and power relations between languages are being reorganized, renegotiated and/or reaffirmed and the concepts of foreignization and domestication are challenged by that of globalization.

Description: The organizers invite papers that will not just deal with the management of only one of the above-mentioned differences but will offer a more comprehensive view relating all or many of them. In other words, papers should not just focus on different text types or vocabularies but try to relate them to their more general socio-historical and social contexts as well as their technical environments. Conversely, social or cultural approaches should be evidenced by differences at lower levels. How do translators accommodate diversity when confronted with not just foreign documents but also different contexts? What type of solutions do they come up with? Additionally, the organizers invite innovative papers that will just not repeat well-known concepts or models but will try to bring in new ideas from other fields such as history, political science, anthropology, sociology, sociolinguistics, philosophy, communication studies, etc. By suggesting drawing parallels with, underlining differences with or borrowing from other conceptualizations, the organizers expect participants to reenergize Translation Studies and better defines its specificity.

Finally, the organizers welcome papers that will not just concentrate on the major European languages but also on translation between:
• languages and cultures from different continents,
• minority and majority languages and cultures,
• minority languages and cultures.

Aim of the conference: This international conference would like to bring together Indian and non-Indian perspectives on translation with a view to setting up a platform for discussion, comparison and long-term collaboration. It aims to analyze how different cultures interact and interfere with one another through translation.

Venue: Université de Bretagne-Sud, Lorient, France. Lorient is served by a domestic airport and has regular high-speed train (TGV) connections with Paris (Montparnasse station).

Participants: Scholars in the fields of Translation Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociolinguistics, Languages, Indology or with an interest in Intercultural Communication. Working language: English and French.
Hospitality: University of Bretagne-Sud cannot offer hospitality to participants. A list of hotels will be provided.
