Description:
Everyone agrees Translation Studies (TS) is a young discipline; but how old is it exactly? Assuming it was born in Leuven in 1976, it should be 32. There are other possible dates, of course, but this one is useful because it highlights a generation change. The scholars who met in Belgium three decades ago— and the many others who have joined forces to establish TS as an academic discipline in its own right— are handing over the baton to younger scholars with graduate and undergraduate degrees in translation. In short, we are moving from the generation of pioneers to the first generation of TS– native scholars.
Where are future translation scholars educated? What are TS graduate programmes like? What is their position within their respective higher– education institutions and systems? These and other questions are being investigated by TS Doc, a working group on the integration of doctoral programmes in translation studies set up in December 2007 with a simple yet ambitious agenda: drawing a map of doctoral programmes, collecting data from them, and setting up a forum for the exchange of best practices.
TS Doc has been conducting a survey of European doctoral programmes since the start of 2008 and will round up the first year of operation at a conference kindly hosted by the Centre for Translation Studies of the University of Vienna on December 5 and 6, 2008.
Contributions are invited on all issues related to doctoral programmes in TS, their challenges and objectives, and possible strategies for cooperation and integration. The conference will be an opportunity to share ideas and best practices and to understand differences and similarities between programmes. Also, at a time when many new translation courses are being offered across Europe, the employment prospects of young scholars with graduate degrees in translation may be explored.
“ Integrating doctoral programmes in translation studies” will add institutional and administrative issues to the typical scientific gathering. This will be reflected in the conference programme. There will be plenty of room for open debate and interaction among the participants. Beside the individual presentations we are all familiar with, we encourage panel and round– table sessions on specific topics.
