AUSIT 2010 BIENNIAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE Get Ready to Synergise!

Event theme(s): The biennial national conferences organised by AUSIT, the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators, have been attracting translators and interpreters, linguists and language service industry players from across Australia and overseas since 1999. This year's conference promises to be even more exciting and comprehensive than its predecessors. Just metres from the pristine beaches of the Indian Ocean in the vibrant port city of Fremantle, Western Australia, knowledge about research and practice in translating and interpreting will be shared and enhanced thanks to the enormous potential of synergy. Well respected speakers, industry experts, academics and language professionals will gather at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle to generate new ideas, cross disciplinary boundaries, discuss future directions and the changing market for translation and interpreting services in Australia and globally. Topics will include: technological advances in the field of translating and interpreting the impact of CAT tools, MT, social networking media and crowdsourcing industry engagement with the translating and interpreting profession quality assurance procedures cross-cultural communication and training professional ethics in practice occupational health and ergonomics for translators and interpreters provision of T&I services for rare and emerging language communities Indigenous language services marketing and business management training and competencies Continuing Professional Development and practitioner credentials mentoring policies and regulatory instruments We look forward to welcoming you in beautiful Western Australia!

Description: The organising committee of the AUSIT 2010 BIENNIAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE requests papers for 20-to-30-minute presentations, and proposals for workshops and panel discussions.

In offering a paper, please consider the conference theme of synergy. Your paper should explore, engage with and illuminate some aspects from the following areas of interest:
Technological advances in the field of translating and interpreting
Industry engagement with the translating and interpreting profession
Quality Assurance procedures
Cross-cultural communication and training
Professional ethics in practice
Occupational health for translators and interpreters
Provision of T&I services for rare and emerging language communities
Indigenous language services
Marketing and business management
Training and competencies
Continuing Professional Development and practitioner credentials
Mentoring
Policies and regulatory instruments
Some examples of questions presenters may want to address:
Why some aspects of techniques, technology and theory of translation and interpreting are worthy of renewed attention;
What are the most promising features in policy measures aimed at achieving access and equity for linguistically diverse communities;
How mutual benefits are derived from collaboration with professional T&I within various fields of industry, commerce, state institutions, government administration, arts and science;
What are the best practices ensuring the highest possible quality for language services delivery;
What are the available resources to prevent a message from getting lost in translation;
What are the still unmet needs in cross-cultural communication and training;
How to resolve ethical dilemmas in everyday practice (e.g. a translator dealing with documents of suspicious origins, an interpreter in a situation where human rights may be compromised);
How to deal emotionally with traumatic assignments, how to care for your voice, how to position computer and keyboard and how to keep fit when spending long hours sitting in front of them;
What are the latest challenges in providing high quality T&I services for rare and emerging language communities;
What are the latest trends in the provision of indigenous language services;
How to harness the power of marketing for your own advantage as a free-lance translator and/or interpreter;
Why it is important to learn about managing your own business and research insurance options;
What is happening in the field of training new practitioners;
Where to seek resources to maintain currency, increase knowledge, hone skills and get CPD points;
How mentoring becomes the best example for synergy; and
How synergy works its magic in the field of T&I.

Please send an abstract of approximately 300 words of the proposed presentation together with brief biographical details to 2010AusitBNC@iinet.net.au by 31 May 2010.
Selected presenters will be notified by 30 June and will be asked to confirm their participation by 15 July 2010.
